I run MM on my laptop via a 8" screen , but also have the Memory Map Adventurer 3500 GB. This is the best way to use MM if you do not want to run computer. They are available from Devon 4X4 for £320, but got mine at Cotswold for £260. As mentioned before you can also use the Memory Map Adventurer 2800, but the screen is very small, and these are availble from Devon 4X4 at £245, but again can be got from others cheaper. These also come with discs for your home PC should they be required.

All the MM devices should be the GB versions which come with all the UK maps. You can buy the sections should you wish, but will cost you more in the long run.

can't fault the satmap. I find with an iphone 3GS that the GPS is very unreliable. it gets confused between cell towers and actual gps and sometimes is way way out. its not reliable at all. satmap on the other hand is pinpoint accurate at all times and the route recording function is easy to use, easy to save and store the routes. if you get a satmap, get the suction cup mount to, its very reliable. I've been experimenting with an iPad and whilst the screen is fantastic, its a big bit of kit to have in the front if you're bouncing around.
