Defender loving Metal Detectorist looking for Land
Hi all

I belong to a small club (16 members)of metal detectorists in the North Wiltshire area. All have NCMD insurance and are very responsible people with a love of history.

My other half has volunteered for the unloved duties of Field Site Officer as the previous holder had stepped down
last December. I know not all landowners/farmers are keen on metal detecting (some have given the hobby a bad name) but I was wondering if anyone on this Defender site might know or be able to help us find new pastures so to speak.

Chris, my other half (& I) would be happy to chat with anyone if there were any possibilities around the North Wilts/Oxford/Glos regions (or anywhere slightly further afield).

Thank you for reading my message, I'll keep my fingers crossed Very Happy

I belong to a club in the west midlands and one of the members has just lost a permission thanks to night hawkers.

Sorry to hear that.

Chris spoke to a local landowner on Saturday, near some fields he currently has the use of and found him in two minds as to whether to let any detecting on his land due to his family abusing their connections by finding and not showing (or letting him know) of a small group of coins they had found. Not a happy chap but could be open to negotiation if we can convince him we are not thieves and would let him know of any finds etc.

One benefit, Chris offers the current landowner is that by being there he is able to keep an eye on "Rubbish Dumpers" and the odd courser up to no good.

So, can you explain please.....
So l have some land which may/ may not be suitable for metal detecting ( high presence of lead shot).
What happens if you find say a gold ring or something that is worthy of notification to which ever relevant body but still has a value?
Just interested to know before I offer it.
Cheers

Hi Guy

Usual agreement is a 50/50 split between the land owner and finder.

Where abouts in Derbyshire are you?

Cheers

Jon

Guy, I can give you a personal example here although it was the top part of a 17th century silver seal and not as your item.

It was only a small piece and didn't look anything special but at a club meeting the local FLO (Finds Liason Officer) for the Wiltshire museums took a look at it and deemed it over 250 years old and needing further investigation (as would a gold ring possibly) The seal top was recorded "treasure" under the Treasure Act and went through the Coroner's office.

At the end of the day after much to'ing and fro'ing with communications, the seal top was declared as not of any value and as no museum wanted it it was to be returned to the FLO. It took a year to get it back and it will now be presented to the farmer (who had been kept in the loop so knew what was going on)

The FLO reckoned it was the most uninteresting "treasure" he had had to record all year!

Otherwise most finds are generally agreed with the landowner/farmer to be split 50/50 as mentioned earlier. Though there are those that like to keep a record of all finds including pottery as they have an interest in the history of their land. as I know.

I am sure that can be frustrating for metal detectorists. I am an archaeologist and do use detectorists on some of my digs when possible. Never had any treasure turn up tho lol.

Keeping the pottery is a good idea in my book and so is recording find spots... There is a misconception that a decent find will get a site scheduled and therefore it will be off bounds to anyone with a detector. It would take something amazing for that to happen and in all my years I have never known it. So don't be put off reporting finds but I suppose the the length of time it takes to get an object back must be off putting to.

I metal detect and in 2014 I was lucky enough to find the hoard of Bronze Age Axe Heads and Annular Ring shown in the photo below. The link below the photo gives a full description on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website.

My 2015 110 Utility XS is a great tool for metal detecting.

Nice find there BobT well done. It's every detectorists dream to find a hoard of some description.

I have got my name in the March issue of treasure hunting magazine for a couple of finds i made while on a club dig.

All being well I will be in April issue too for a queen anne hc I found.

That gave me a buzz so you must of been floating in the clouds with your find

Thumbs Up

Thanks,
I was up in the air when I found it in 2014, but the Treasure Process is a long, slow business and it was very frustrating. The good thing that came out was the museum eventually disclaimed the hoard and it was returned to me and the landowner to do with as we pleased. I bought him out so they are now mine.
I've offered them on loan to York Museum and they will take them when they have a Bronze Age themed display.
I've still got to go back with a mini digger and dig down deeper and I think there may be more stuff there.

Great find Bob!

If you go back with a mini digger, please, please find a friendly archaeologist. That deep and you are in the realm of stratigraphy and anything would need careful recording. Its not so much the objects but more the context that they are found in that is the important thing for us.

It would also help bridge the gap between archaeologists and detectorists..I have spent years doing that and it at last is paying off.

Best wishes

I've already told my FLO of my intentions and if we come across anything we will stop and give her a call before proceeding.
When we do it is weather and crop dependent.
