The front diff oil seal on my TD5 is marking it's territory ... again !
Checked the breather and it is clear but put an airline on it a couple of weeks ago to make sure ! The only thing I can think of is the flange needs replacing as well. I have found this Gwyn Lewis kit which should do the job - I will have to remove the existing spacer if there is one. http://www.gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product/disc...onversion/ Has anybody used this kit ? I would rather use something from a reputable person rather than some spares dealer sending me a blue box part !!! Don't know yet James. Started looking at it this afternoon but frostbite got in the way ! The flange is the original and it has done a lot of off road work so I would not be surprised to find the shaft damaged or worn. As the breather is clear, I checked again today, I am at a loss as to what else it could be - dodgy seal is a possibility I suppose but the last one fitted was genuine LR.
I don't particularly want to strip it down and then have to wait for parts if needed. I know it is not a long job to do but I would rather get it done in one go in this weather. mine do a fair bit off off road and if the mud shield is there you shouldnt get any crud in behind on the seal. mine seem ok never had a failure on that front.
so breather removed and blown through? Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Breather has been blown through but I am going to replace the tube as I have some new stuff here.
Got a chance to have a look today (in between gardening chores !) and the mud shield looks like it has been damaged at some point - one area looks like it has been pushed back towards the prop so I am wondering if the opposite side is distorted the other way and destroying the seal. The only way to see what really is wrong is to take the flange off, job for this week if the weather holds out ! Update.
Took it all to bits this afternoon, only the seal to remove now. The flange shaft is marked quite badly where the seal sits so hopefully that is the problem. The Gwyn Lewis kit came today and is certainly a comprehensive kit and quality looks excellent. Should get it all back together Thursday. If you have a groove were the seals sits then that is what is leaking. Roel

I can understand that. Probably cheaper to replace the flange to save return warranty trips.
I am glad I got the flange, apart from the fact the old one was marked anyway, as the last person who took it off (not me !) kindly put Loctite on the splines ! It took a lot of persuading with a rubber mallet to remove. Finally got to finish this today and I think the answer to the problem was a botched job by the indie I use - that should now read used to use !
When I took the flange bolt off I was surprised it took virtually no force at all. I had heard the horror stories and had a good supply of explosives ready to shift it ![]() First issue was the garage had used Loctite on the flange splines so it was a pig to get off. When i went to remove the seal this morning something did not look right. The new seal I had was the same as the one fitted and has a lip on the inner seal which should be flush or slightly below the diff case. I think you have guessed where this is going, the old seal had the outer edge flush with the case meaning the inner seal lip was trashed in the mud shield and the flange was not fully fitted hence the reason the bolt almost fell out. On cleaning the area where the seal fits I noticed there is a ridge which the seal should rest against and it stops the seal hitting the bearing. Seal fitted, new drive flange ( which slid on easily after the Loctite was removed from the shaft !) and new retaining bolt torqued up correctly ! New prop bolts and new front axle breather tube fitted plus new diff oil. I don't know if the drive flange was damaged due to the bodge or not. Provided the seal is seated OK I can see no reason for the diff to leak now but time will tell !
