Does anyone have any recommendations for supply and fit of replacement domestic Aluminium Windows in the South West?
An indication of cost would be useful too Phil |

I put an aluminium back door in my parents house a while back (used a local company in Norwich so not a lot of use for the south west). Had real reservations about condensation as per defender9's post above. As the family knew the sales rep from old, we took a punt on it and it has been very good, but it did have the thermal block / bridge around the frame which is what stands between the good ones and the terrible Windows from the 80's.
I do remember that it was quire a bit more expensive than a plastic alternative (off the top of my head 30-40%, but it was a while ago so don't quote me), and we have never fitted another door or any Windows in aluminium since. |

I've been doing quite a lot of research into aluminium windows for my house, albeit in Scotland, not the south west. However it seems to boil down to a lot of companies producing windows based on the Smarts aluminium extrusion, or a few imported German companies, for example https://www.schueco.com. I've been pricing up a 1200mm by 1200mm tilt and turn window with different colours inside (white) and out (anthracite). Prices seem to be around the £1,200 ish mark for the Smarts based frames up to £2,200 for the Scheuco. But you get what you pay for. Quality and insulation are better in the Scheuco for example.
For other windows in my house I've got with Aluminium clad wood windows. If it's external maintenance or aesthetics you're worried about they could be a good fit. Does mean you have to paint the inside though. |

Wow - £1200 each or £2200 Thanks for the insight!
We have two people coming out on Thursday to have a look and quote. I am hearing that Origin is also a good brand worthy of some investigation and I will speak to these firms to see what they have to say about the various brands out there. I am not a huge subscriber to the you get what you pay for ethos as I am sure some firms/businesses are happy to sell cr@p at high prices to lure in people who think quality comes at a price. High price doesn't mean good value or necessarily good quality. Hence asking lots of questions and doing lots of research. Incidentally, I am sure I read that Scheuco are not manufactured in-house and are made by a number of different manufacturing companies. Not that this means they are not class-leading but it was cited as a weakness in their reputation. The replacement window business has had a bad rep in the last 20 years which leaves me nervous that we will be taken for a ride... This is going to be a nightmare experience and no doubt very costly - in £ and hair! Phil |

I believe you are right Orangesofa, I don't think spending large amounts of money always gives you a better product (God help me, I spent a fortune on a Defender )
There are some real crap window companies out there along with good companies who employ fitters who don't care. Thus, they can be the best Windows money can buy, but if the fitters screw up, you may as well not bother. I have a house whose windows were fitted by a very reputable company in Norwich (who are still trading and fairly well respected). We replaced our largest window, a 1970's whopper 4ft x 10ft which was held in by three fixings, newspaper, blue roll paper and a bit of expandable foam. The damp proof membrane on most had been compromised by shoddy fitting and the cavity break compromised in numerous places letting damp in around the window. One window had the area between the window and the cill mastic sealed up where it should have been open for drainage. Reasonable Windows that had to be replaced due to crap fitting. I didn't waste my breath complaining to them, but I did vote with my wallet as they didn't fit the new ones! |

We used these guys

We don't install a big number of windows thru work (Agricultural Buildings) but when we do for farm offices or welfare faculties we always use aluminium windows and generally from Johnstons Aluminium Glass, but unfortunately based in Clacton-on-Sea couldn't be much further away from you, sorry. Im not sure why this hasn't been said already but how are you supposed to see through aluminium windows? Surely glass ones would be better?
Sorry, I couldn't resist, I'll get my coat.......... |
