200Tdi Altenator Upgrade
Hi Guys,

My alternator is slowly giving out, its not quite got the guts it used to and the battery is not getting its full charge.

If I put my high beams on and the heater on full the volt meter on the dash dives into the red.

This was confirmed by the man at Halfords with the electronic piece of equipment.

I have bought an upgraded 120A with new cable and belt.

The original 45A alternator has 3 wires attached to the plug, the new one has just a big bolt to attach to.

Am I right in thinking if I cut the plug off, combine the 3 wires onto a ring connector, add that ring and the new wire to the bolt with he other end on the starter motor and then reassemble?

This may come as a surprise given the in depth technical description I have given of my plan but electrics are not my strong point..... Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I think you'll do well to run a 120A alternator fully via the single V-belt, but good luck nonetheless.

Won't be a problem if you don't use its full capacity though.

I think I should be ok given that if I turned everything electrical on and charged a phone it probably still comes to less than 120A Laughing

How were the RR 200tdi's belted then? I thought they were just a single V belt and had 120A alternators?

Thanks for the clearance Dorset Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I was under the impression it was a 65A unit on Disco/RRC. Also an option on Defenders with air con etc.

I have the 65A unit in mine, does fine and can't see anyone requiring more unless you were driving lit up like Blackpool Illuminations.
