Strange clutch behaviour and noises (sometimes)??
I know there have been plenty of posts about Puma (2.4) clutch problems and I have trawled through, I think, most of them but I can't quite match up the problem my 2007 Puma is having with what's listed already. Any advice would be much appreciated ...

My defender runs lovely in all respects apart from weird clutch behaviours. Its done 98k and has a reasonably good service history and recent (last 2 months) complete oil change (I mean ALL oils/fluids/filters etc.). Gear changes have been reasonably smooth and easy up to this point, especially since the complete oil change. However ...

1) Occasionally, when starting in 1st, at traffic lights for example, the defender gets going in reverse! Yikes. Initially, I thought maybe I was being stupid, but no matter how carefully I position the stick, if its in that mood, then 1st will only select reverse. If I flick straight down from 1st to 2nd and get going from there, it moves forwards as desired ... so its a problem I can sort of live with, Ive got in to the habit of quickly & gently testing what its going to do before really putting my foot down Wink

2) The above behaviour is erratic. It'll go for weeks and weeks without doing the '1st = reverse' problem and then seemingly randomly will just start doing it again. After the oil change, it didn't do it for ages until just recently.

3) This week, on a cold morning, I started the defender up and went for a short drive, no problems. Parked-up had a coffee for 45 minutes and went to drive home ... when I started up the second time, no problems until I depressed the clutch and then I heard a fairly loud whirring noise, the gear changes became horribly stiff too, 1st and 2nd in particular.

4) Started up the next day ... no problems. all fine. Maybe gear change is a little stiff. Not that noticeable though.

5) Started up the next day, everything really stiff and difficult to change gear again. Noticed this time that I only get the whirring noise if I fully depress the clutch to the floor. If I only depress it 90% of the way, it all works fine ... no noises but gear change a bit stiff some of the time.

6) Since then, the gear changes have become really quite difficult. Really hard to get in to 1st and 2nd now ... and the random '1st = reverse' problem is back randomly. Previously, I used to just 'offer up' the gear change to the defender and it would (fairly) smoothly clunk in to position without much effort ... not the case now.

I've stopped driving it for the moment until I work out what might be going on. Any thoughts, ideas, words of wisdom much appreciated.

Sorry for the long post. I wasn't are how to describe all of that in a more succinct way.

I would guess its gearbox issues rather than clutch, would suggest a phone call to Ashcrofts in the morning

good luck!

Thanks Keith ... I'll give that a try. Ashcroft have a pretty impressive web site, I guess thats the place to go for anything transmission related then.
