Series 3 Possible Purchase..Owners what Are they like to own
Hello

Well, I've been looking around quietly for a little time although being completely honest didn't really know the difference between a series II, 2a and 3 apart from the obvious lights in the wings and dash...being metal / plastic

Ages ago I was looking at an MGB GT, something a bit different that 'could' fit the family in for short local days out... Anyway since owning my Defender I'm converted.

So a Series car makes sense (3 seats at the front) so the Kids will love being picked up from School, space in the back for stuff. So its fairly practical,

I also like the idea I could bolt the top off and fit hood sticks and a canvas roof for 'summer' if we get one Smile

So I've spotted this, local, owner has had it 7 years and done around 300 to 800 miles a year. Garage has serviced and Mot'd it and done various works including full brakes, bushes, weld chassis, Its a SIII with overdrive and safari roof. 2 and a bit petrol engine. Smile Starts on the turn every time I'm told.

Looks genuine and the owners started to revamp it (newer seats etc)

I know it may not be a proper old one, but its not silly money and looks genuine?

I would rather not discus the price as I'm happy with that and they vary all over the place if you start looking..., however would be good to hear what you (other owners of SIII's think) Good fun? or not so good?

More amazingly I have the Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up FROM THE BOSS Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

This is the look I would like.... OK so this may require a lot of work / cash? (if a repsray is involved) but for now I would rather make sure underneath is ok and stuff works Smile all bits can be done over time Smile

IT looks fine from the pics you posted. If it's a solid chassis, and you like it at the price, then go for it! Petrol engines are purrrfect for Series vehicles. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

^ Your right

The plan would be to keep it as std as possible and 'try' not to spend too much on it... (Save the pennies for my daily)

The wheels, I like the std steel look in white (I could refurbish them) or what were you thinking? with new tyres. Like thsi look

I could get quite excited about a new toy Smile

I love Series Land Rovers, owned them for over 40 years but if you have never owned one before I would go in eyes wide open. They are slow, noisey, uncomfortable (compared to a modern car) and quite thirsty. Series 3's probably had the worst reputation of all the Series vehicles for build quality - British Leyland!! Also the steel used in the chassis was particularly poor.
Get it inspected properly if you are not completely clued up about them. They are great fun but as I say go in eyes wide open. And if you are proposing to have children in the front make sure you have proper seat belt and anchorage points, all too often people just bolt the seat belts to the aluminium bulkhead behind the seats, not a good idea.

I bought the S3 before the Defender but didn't buy that well so have spent a fortune! They are proper old fashioned driving, even petrol version holds up the traffic and very uncomfortable. Kids hate it but their mates love it! Shouldn't really like it but I do and filled with character. Not respraying means not having to worry about branches. Good luck with this, if you like a Defender you should enjoy it! .

Looks lovely Scott, but personally I'd leave it as is. Genuine station wagons seem to be thin on the ground, and that looks very unmolested. But that's my personal opinion, and at the end of the day it's only a giant meccano kit. (And I'm jealous really that you've found such a nice example Embarassed )

The previous manager at the nursery the kids go to had one (was featured in the buyers guide in practical classic's a while back). Slow and noisy, but she loved it. Reckoned the bonnet mounted spare improved mpg Shocked Shocked 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Here's mine, I love it and can thoroughly recommend you get yourself one!

I wouldn't worry about keeping the roof on for originality, it took a mate and I less than an hour to remove the roof and door tops on mine, they are stored in the barn if I ever want to revert back. I bought a exmoor trim sand canvas roof and hood sticks but have never fitted them. I'm currently rebuilding it with a galvanised chassis, bulkhead and front panel. Should be ready for summer! Then I can start on my series 2 Shocked Rolling Eyes

^ That looks ACE Very Happy

(sent you a PM)

When you take the roof and top half of doors is the trim already on the top of the door or do you have to get that separate?

Post some more pics please.

Thanks

Hi, I've replied to your PM mate.

The series vehicles have a galvanised capping on the tub and top of doors, so you wont need to add those.

If you're going down the soft top route, you'll need a canvas hood & hood sticks (I got both from Exmoor Trim), a drop down tailgate to replace the rear door and probably some tie down fixings for the hood if it hasn't had one on before. All of this can be tackled at home without much trouble.

The wheels on that one look fine, but the tyres look tiny! I have these on mine:

Have a look over on the Series 2 forum too. I know you're after a 3 but you'll get to know what they're all about and with a bit of luck you may see the light and get yourself a 2 instead Thumbs Up
