The only companies I'd use for a remap are Bell Auto, Alive or IRB. Personally I went with BAS as the supplier of the Land Rover, Bowler and Twisted remaps. Well worth the drive! James

ok thanks guys, some of these maps are expensive, I've had the 2.2 since February before this I had an 09 90 obviously a 2.4, I had that remapped by monster tuning, it cost £150, I was really pleased with it, it drove beautifully, much better than standard and I averaged just over 30mpg over 3 years mostly just around town, how come most places are 500 quid plus, its all well and good saying you get what you pay for but what actually are you getting? Monster tuning seems to be all franchised out now and I believe the ecu has to be opened up so i'm not as happy going to them

Yes the ECU has to be opened for the binary wizardry to happen on a 2.2. £500 quid is a lot of money but then again you are asking a person to use the knowledge and time earned skill to go and modify the engines brain. IMHO that skill is worth paying for and not risking expensive damage. Heck I drove from Devon to Alive HQ in Licolnshire to have mine done.
For a tangible explanation using someone like as mentioned above (Alive, BAS, IRB and JE etc..etc..) You pay your readies for something like this: *Purchase and acquiring of a 2.2 ECU when they are just released *Long hours and work to decode the encryption and 'open' the ECU *Downloading the mapping of the standard one to the again expensive software - This could include working with software manufactures to create the programme to read and then rewrite the engine mapping. *now onto creation of prototype maps and dyno testing to ensure vehicle parameters are not exceeded and safe working temperatures are met. *further testing on road and in the dyno to create a working and user desirable product.( a very peaky torque or power profile or inconsistent throttle mapping isn't for everyone) *further testing to ensure longer term engine performance and reliability is met *initial release with possible long term user feedback and updates to the mapping to reflect manufacture and customer demands. (E.g the autobiography 150 tune released by JLR and being taken onboard) so after all that £500 is justified for me. initial TD5 maps were just as expensive when the TD5 was new. |

and when I had mine done by Alive using their dealer in Broadstairs it took about 3 hours to unlock ECU, download map, send to Gary, receive new map and upload into ECU and then test on te rolling road. 1 before rolling road test and 2 afterwards.
Excellent service and the coffee was good as well |

My strong recommendation would be to stick to remapping by either Alive Tuning, BAS or IRB. These companies specialise in Defenders.
We have had vehicles remapped by both Alive and BAS and are happy with the service from both of them. I would suggest you do your own research on all the companies mentioned and make up your own mind. Brendan |

yes, research is difficult, I was pleased with my £150 map, it transformed my 2.4 but what was I actually buying ? it would seem its not difficult to transform a defender, my 2.2 is shocking as standard......`are these expensive maps written from scratch or simply a tweaked standard map, if I were to rock up to a well known tuner in my old 2.4 with my cheapo map installed could they transform that ?? and justify the extra extra 500 quid, it would have to be pretty spectacular and I have my doubts, I just want to spend my hard earned wisely, sometimes you get the impression that people think its expensive so it must be good and some will try to scare you "use a cheap map at your peril " when for all most of us know they could all be using the exact same map..... I dunno,

There are many posts on this subject re which map is best and why spend more.
I have had several maps and chips in various vehicles. Some excellent and some not so good. Like you I did my research. My previous 90 had an excellent BAS map. My current 110 has an excellent Alive map. I personally would heed the advice in this thread. Go for a recognised LR specialist you won't regret it. |

well, I went for a BAS 170bhp remap, firstly their service was excellent, I posted my ecu special delivery at 5pm on Monday afternoon and it came back vis ups at 10 am on Wednesday morning, first impressions are that the drive is a lot smoother, this was my main gripe with the 2.2 so that i'm happy with, I don't tend to drive quickly so outright performance isn't of much interest to me, however the increased power and torque seems to drag me up hills with greater ease, comfortably pulling 5th when before I needed 4th, I've not had too much time to drive it but i'm more pleased every time I do, its a lot of money but its made a better truck of it so that has to be good, thanks for all the advice and thanks to Pete at BAS

I too went the BAS route with their remote tool as it offers the ability to perform some of the more useful resets, and fueling system diagnosis. The one overriding comment I must make is that their customer service is excellent and in my experience nothing appears too much trouble. That confidence in the supplier is worth paying for in my view. The difference it makes to the vehicle is excellent I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
