I think 90% of people on this forum probably received a copy for Christmas!!

Not opened it yet, always suspicous of a book when the commens on the dust jacket fall into one of these categories:
1) A comment on a previous book by the same author
2) something taken out of context
3) something about what a nice person the author is.

The comments on the Ben Fogle LR book manage to hit all three categories Big Cry

Got it for Christmas from the other half - and got about half way through it. Sympathise with the above comments.

She also bought be 'Norwegian Wood' by Lars Mytting - loads more interesting!

I got both of those too!

I agree with general sentiment although I don't sympathise with the comments about "he's a celeb, not an author". Any self respecting publisher would have got an editor to tidy this up. Find myself reading pages convinced I've read exactly the same thing a few pages earlier. Have big beef with the switching between first and third person in the photo captions and sudden changes of tense - but that's just me being a pedant. Also, I'm no expert but there are plenty of times I've found myself going "er, no, actually, that's incorrect" in a rather geeky voice.

As they say, never judge a book by it's cover (it is a nice cover).

It's all right for you lot, I ended up with two copies for Christmas! I've palmed one off as a present to a friends son. he's only 13, land Rover mad and dyslexic. Turns out it's the first book he has voluntarily picked up and taken to school to read so perhaps that's the target audience.
I've flicked through the pages, looked at the pictures and that's about it!

The bulk of the 'factual' historical stuff in the Ben Fogle book is from "The story behind the legend" by David Phillips. (He gets a small reference in Ben's book).

I read David Phillips book not long after Ben Fogle's and did a double take thinking I had read it before.

Is that the same Dave Phillips who was the editor of LRM? I read Frank Elson's article in LRM this month in which he shreds Fogle's book - 'I'm afraid I couldn't finish this book......and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.....you will probably have been bought it by a friend. Not well written and not well edited either'.

That could have made for an awkard editorial meeting.....

Agreed, the book is quite poorly written and sadly, I'll-conceived. It's too factually lenient for enthusiasts - so the target audience seems to be people with a casual interest who have the patience for 200 pages of uninformed fanboy writing.
