main dealer charges
Well, I know that an official dealer will charge about £600 for a service but goodness me, £260 to change the rear pads!!!
OK so £160 an hour is the labour charge and of course a minimum of one hour has to be charged and the pad kit cost £52 but £17.50 for a bit of copaslip??? I bought a tub for less than a tenner and it will grease about 2000 sets of pads. I guess the good news though is that the spanner guy discovered a couple of problems that were fixed under warranty.
As an aside, is the Land rover extended warranty worth the £700? The dealer is recommending it but I reckon it is a lot of dosh and if I use a good indy for servicing I will save a fair bit so if I get any problems I will have some cash put to one side.
I would welcome the views of the forum members, also any recommendations for an independent in the Herts/beds area?

thanks

How long is the extended warranty? If it's a year, then a bit pricey but if it's 2 or 3 then good value.

As far as main dealer charges - main dealers do get a hard time but stop and take a look at the places. They have high location costs, running costs, MASSIVE franchise fees from JLR (each scan tool costs them many many ££ annually). Far higher overheads than smaller independents who likely make as much or more on a sale of an used motor as the dealer does on the sale of a new one. Of course the flip side is that for the higher charge, they MUST provide excellent service standards.... which is a different story of course.

Personally I wouldn't encourage them & I therefore I don't use them .
£160hr is outrageous.
I don't even do my contract hire directly with a dealer - I use an agent.

£160.00 an hour Shocked

The real shocking thing is that many main Dealers farm out some of their jobs to independant garages who charge the dealerships special discount rates on labour charges. I know of one Main dealership in the Greater manchester area that reguarly farms out its work to a local independant Land Rover garage in Stockport who chages £45.00 and hour. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Funnily enough, my own Defender was delivered to a main dealer for some warranty work to be undertaken. It was then driven right across the city to another 'specialist' garage to be sorted - the mileage and empty full tank were a giveaway.

Nothing on the paperwork to reflect that the official dealer had sub-contracted the work out. The service receptionist had let slip another name during our handover ...... left me wondering ......

Apparently some main dealers are very very busy and don't have all the resources available in-house?
