Rear Diff noise
Hoping for some advice.

Noise started yesterday at 80kph/50mph with rumbling from the rear which significantly increased under deceleration. Coasting in neutral makes no difference.
Under power there is no noise at all.

Jacked up each corner and checked for wheel bearing play but both sides are fine. Diff seemed warm to hot, like a house radiator. Not burning or anything and I could keep my hand on it. Drained off a tiny bit of fluid and its honey coloured.

Google suggests pinion bearing.

Im positive its from the rear but noise travels on the chassis so could be wrong.

Any ideas?

Drop the back end of the rear prop and check the pinion backlash, and also the end- and cross-float on the pinion shaft flange.

It does indeed sound like a diff related noise from the description. I presume that the oil level is correct? Does it leak anywhere, especially eround the flange oil seal?

no fluid leaks, and yes i have checked there is actually fluid in it!

Is the pinion bearing a sod to do?

Depends on your experience, really!

Remove diff assembly from axle, strip out the diff, remove pinion, replace bearings, reshim pinion height and preload, refit the diff in housing, set up backlash, check tooth engagement with engineers blue, adjust if necessary, fit new pinion oil seal, replace assembly in axle. Job done!

A preliminary step before getting to far into it would be to check the pinion nut - on one of my previous Defenders it managed (on Christmas eve night!) to spit out its split pin and undo itself, which led to some quite unpleasant noises.

I'm not sure of the locking nut design on your age of diff - maybe Blackwolf can clarify if this is a possibility or not. It certainly gave the symptoms you are describing.

It will be a threadlocked set screw, and Thon makes a very good point. They can work loose, and if they do there will be excessive movement in the pinion. Definitely worth checking before getting deeper in the mire.

To check, drop the rear end of the propshaft and the setscrew will be revealed.

Thats exactly whats happened. Managed to get it on the ramp and dropped the prop down which made it very easy to see.

i have nipped it back up but anyone have a clue to the part number for the screw as it probably needs replaced long term

Just wondering what the grand prize may be ....?

I'm just glad you found it because by the time mine was recovered it had damaged the ring & pinion sufficiently to need replacing.

Took a tentative drive down the mountain today and It's absolutely fine now.

The grand prize is a virtual high five I'm afraid. The wife has spent all my money on the new house. Who knew tins of paint could be bought for €160 each!

When mine went, diagnosed by and Independent garage, after lifting both rear wheel and turning the wheels by hand you could hear it rumble like a cement mixer with a couple of bricks in it. The oil was dropped to check for swarf . When he worked out the cost in time for replacing just the bearing etc. it working out cheaper to stick a new diff in for the warranty company. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.
