Toying with the idea of building a off road teardrop trailer based on a sankey or penman trailer. I was wondering if anyone had done one on here?

I know that teardrop trailers are quite funky, but it has to be the least practical shape known to man. Why not something more boxy, particularly if being towed behind a Defender?
On a more useful note, trailer building is quite a 'thing' over on sister site Disco3.com. Search for a member called wiggs. Hello
So many options.... An easy one and many have done it is use a Sankey as it is, roof rack and roof tent for camping... Easy and cheap (ish) I'm gradually doing up a Sankey but keeping it pretty std for camping trips, take the bikes and since our caravan was stolen we do like to 'glamp' rather than camp so do take a lot of stuff This is mine which still needs a fair bit doing... Click image to enlarge I've really enjoyed nipping into the garage and spending time faffing around with it |

Kicking a few ideas around on an Idle day and if I had the time then I have considered the concept similar the American's style of slightly more boxy but still off-road capable mini caravan. So kinda a teardrop but more boxy.
http://www.panthertrailercompany.com/ Or google Moby 1 So Sankey base and a ply style constrction with foam inserts for lightness but enough material left for strength. and either a plastic or very thin aluminum veneer on the outside. |

I like that panther one,
Would have to have a pop up roof though for me, I would like to be able to stand up even at some part... Pricey... We looked at a great one at the NEC caravan show but again big bucks... this idea.. http://caravan-rookie.wingamm.com/rookie-cross/ and this was great, air folding camper.. felt massive inside with bikes on rack etc also http://www.opuscamper.co.uk/air-opus.html Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

I bought a Rapier trailer to do something similar, but larger (2 kids at the time, 3 now).
I spent some time admiring Teardrop trailers - there are some lovely homemade examples on the Teardrop and Tiny Trailer Forum, but in the end, if you have to get a platform above the axle designed to work well behind a Defender, the whole thing is going to be so high and unwieldy, you may as well buy a caravan. You might be able build something suitable for two adults that would work. In the end, dragging my wife around Billing to show her various versions of roof tents we came across a secondhand Globemaster trailer, fully fitted out. We ended up going with that and getting shot of the Rapier. Still tows nicely anywhere you might want to drag a trailer, but it does take a while to pitch fully. Not so good for quick or clandestine camping spots. |

Like the panther. I have looked at several such as the globe master however can't justify the price.
We are the same ingio one kid and one on the way, currently use a roof tent but not big enough so thinking a teardrop style where two can sleep and a roof tent on top for two more. Also would save loading and unloading for the weekend away |
