LightForce HTX230 Hybird
Anyone had any experience of these LED / HID spots.
They are 230mm dia, so possibly to big for my mounting location / plate visibility.
My current spots are 17cm Roos @ 100w each, the others are that bit bigger an the fit is tight as is.

Looking at the spec of the HTX 230's they have a massive output compared to many and look really good.

So anyone seen or used any?

The price however, is huge around £850 a pair and that may not include some important taxes.
They have LED's for flood and HID for long distance combining the two together via switching with no filters to need to adjust from spot or flood.

You can get a light bar from Laser for the same price and they out do the Lighforce, checkout the website they have a comparison of the two which will help you decide

Interesting reading, not too keen though on light bars on the roof.
Not on mine at least or it looks a bit too much like an Xmas tree.

I like the front mounted spots mainly.

Having said that, nothing wrong with light bars to those who do like them. Thumbs Up KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Thought it was worth checking out before you commit, I have 140 lancers on my rack and was just shopping around. Check out Devon 4x4 they do lightforce.

Steve, have experience of Lightforce 140 and 170 not the HTX 230.

Yes the 140 and 170 were impressive in their time but technology has moved on apace.


Now personally I would believe the specification given out by Lightforce at 8,400 effective lumens and IP69K. No E mark however.

OK not cheap but to a certain extent you get what you pay for

Have supplied some Vision X 90 watt spot lights E marked, seen the 25 watt cannons in action and have a Vision X lightbar fitted to one of our vehicles.

Well I'm definitely going for Noldens from Brendan for headlights shortly.

I'm just wondering at a much later date what to do if anything with my spots.

I have 100w 170mm Roo's at the moment which are the equivalent of the LF 170.

They are very good, and there isn't many options out there that can outdo them for output.
At least for spot beam.

I'm not convinced for long distance that LED can outdo Halogen / HID. But LED certainly can do for flood.
I'm mainly interested in spot than flood really.
I see LF do 70w 6000k HID upgrade kits, but it seems they aren't commonly available.
Then of course I do have Roos and not LF versions. Confused

One I will really have to think of as they are very good as is, but there maybe something better out there.
I certainly don't want to downgrade to lower output.
Ideally I would have had K9F Mal's set up he had on his 90 with his LF 240XGT with HID, combined with Nolden headlights.
However, my A bar and number plate mounting keeps me to 170mm spots only, of which K9F's were larger @ 240mm approx.
Lightbars a small one wouldn't work without custom bracketry, not the end of the world but available space is only around 15" max and at that size you don't get great output.
K9F's Rubber A bar allowed more room for fitting, but even then I believe he made custom brackets.

My current bulbs are 100w bi pin. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Without going overboard and getting carried away with the nerd work the HID still comes better.

Vison X 6.7 inch (near as 175mm) 50W LED 1 lux at 768 meters
price £594 (source TMD)

Lightforce striker 170 HID 35w HID 1 lux at 955 meters
price £431.99 (source Devon 4x4)

The vision x on their diagrams still claim a 19meter individual width spread (Diagram here http://www.visionxusa.com/shop/67-light-cannon/) which is narrow and you having Roo's will have a good idea of a similar sized product (the LF 170's) perform spread wise, not exactly the same but close.

So a good LED headlight and the HID spots give the best for both worlds. If you want the increased distance and the spread then you are into Lazer Triple R 16 territory (1lux = 900m Circa 1 lux spread of 35meters - £731) or in your initial post the LF HTX230's (1lux = 1768m's spread of 90 meters (though shallow range of depth) $799AUD {£466} + taxes??? EACH!)

So unless you really go high prices, then HID for pure distance wins and with the LF there is filters to help in the spread stakes too.

Extremely difficult with that amount of information.

If LED headlights I would still recommend Noldens as personally I prefer the overall package.

First consider very carefully what you require from additional lights.

Competition night time driving in wide open spaces needs a different lighting system to someone wanting a bit of extra lighting for dark country lanes.

Budget? Can spend anything from sub£100 or well in excess of £1,000

IP rating? If just quoted as waterproof I personally would say avoid as there is a rating system. IP67 is minimum to accept IP69K is best.

E mark? Essential to be road legal as long as wired/switched correctly.

Light output? Need either measured light output in lumens or effective lumens. If just one figure in lumens is given that will be raw lumens headline figure and is an estimation of light output. Yes it is possible to get too higher actual light output!

Light range? Now many manufacters will give out impressive light isobars with 1 lux at very large distances. 1 lux is roughly moonlight. Now at 60mph stopping distance is 73m so allow say 150-300 metres range for your lights

If electrical power consumption is given in watts that does not have a direct comparison with light output on the road.

Reputation of the manufacturer of the lights. Many well know branded light manufacturers out there with good reputation with many times those with no known brands/reputation. These tends to be at the lower price end of the market. The difficulty is knowing the reputation and quality of these. Lower prices? Does that mean lower quality LED drivers, lower quality LEDs etc?
Just remember if a well known LED manufacturer is mentioned by a unknown/unbranded light manufacturer that does not mean the best LED. There can be as many as 10 grades of actual LEDs under a simple product code, you would need the full product code. Dare I say the better grade of LED are the more expensive?

Appearance? Traditional round shape, rectangular or lightbar. Very personal choice.


Roof mounted lightbars/spots. Unless doing competition go for 3-4 smaller ones wired up so you can have different lights on.

Bumper mounted lights? I personally would avoid underslung lights due to risk of damage. Top mounted bumper lights can be pointed slightly outboard to give a much wider spread of light close to vehicle.

Lights mounted in bumpers? OK limited on size, if big holes cut close to end of bumpers ca make them prone to easy bending.
I have seen some of the cheaper ones rust within weeks of being mounted.

So recommendations? Now if I was a real salesman I would just link to our own pages right at the beginning of this diatribe.

Have a careful think what you want to achieve.

Brands recommended?

Nolden for headlights and 70/90mm optional lights

Vision X for headlights and lightbars. Also theyhave very good spotlights and have introduced a single 90 watt LED light which is a world first

Rigid Industries (now tied in with Truck Lites) for lightbars.

Lazer Lamp LED lightbars, UK produced wide range.

We have used Nolden, Vision X and Lazer Lamp lights on our own vehicles and have been pleased with them

Noldens are a German company which has been around since 1937 so a very well established company.

Land Rover got an independent company to test all the available 7" LED headlights for the last special editions of Defenders and the Nolden 7" BiLeds were chosen. So Noldens are OEM suppliers to Land Rover Defender headlights.

We actually bought all the Land Rover overstock of the Nolden Bi-Led 7" headlights. They are an extremely good headlight and we have sold just a few of these Whistle and can say that the quality is second to none.

Brendan - I know I asked this before and it's neigh impossible to get a 100% accuracy answer but what ball park would you say 1x 100w Halogen spotlight (Roolite or equivalent LF170 would have in lumens)
The LF 170 on their site is neigh in identical to my Roo's, so will go with that and they state 382600 Candela output for 100w Halogen.

What does that equate to in Lumens?
I know there ar variations in useable light I.e. Effective lumens.
But let's go with Raw Lumens and roughly deduct losses from that?
I think you mentioned around 10,000 Lumens are roughly equilivent to 100w Halogen?

I see on the LF page that a 50w HID version has a higher output in Candela to Halogen with a lower draw.
Which can only be seen as a good time, however, I'm aware there is a little bit of a start up delay though.
I can't see that being too much of a drawback though.
I know they have external balasts but I'm wondering now if I could upgrade to HID with what I have.
I think the fitting is H1 but the practicalities I'd have to check and work out what is what.

Back in the day before I was more informed here, being over enthusiastic you tend to think the higher the wattepage the higher the power and brightness but that is not the case with LED's or HID's. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON
