I've replaced the input shaft oil seal on the PAS steering box and the o-ring at the other end, the one where you have to remove the giant lock nut before you can undo the worm adjuster on my TD5 as they seemed to both be leaking. It seems to have stopped the leak but the PAS seems poor, read tight.
I've bleed it as per forum and Haynes manuals all to no avail. I'm confident I've not bodged the repair as it was only the seals/rings I've replaced. I see fluid movement in the reservoir and I can hear the pump struggling on full lock, just not PAS assistance very well. When I removed the worm adjuster I marked its relationship to the body of the box and screwed it back in to said mark. I'm wondering if for what ever reason its now too tight. The truck is drive-able but not like it used to be. Might I do damage to the pump or box if I carry on as I'm due back to work tomorrow. (I'll need to drive 200miles before I can look at it again) Anyone have a link to a 2001 model PAS box? Ideas? Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |

It would appear I had done up the "Worm adjusting screw" too tight. As I only wanted to replaced the o ring I had marked the relationship of the screw (well its a giant 2" dia lump) to the box body and I returned it to that exact position. Which was too tight!
I can now replace a box in 3 hours all in which I think is quite good! It's surprising how quick you can do a job the second time round. I just hope the seals will sort the problem if not I'll go for a recon from Paddocks. Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |
