Most damage done by coolant is when your truck sits for a long time not doing anything.
Change your coolant at the service intervals with whats recommended and then just use it a lot in between. Its probably rusty because someone in the past has just topped it up with normal water and then let it sit for a long time. Drain it, Flush it out with lots and lots of clean water, half fill it with the correct antifreeze and then de-ionised water and it will be fine Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Could some one have filled it with normal water mixed with the glycol, as opposed to distilled?

Absolutely; more than likely I would imagine.
I guess this is another example of why it is preferable to undertake some maintenance yourself. You are always going to take the time and make the effort to do it properly. I am always somewhat skeptical when it comes to trusting garages, regardless of whether they are a main agent or otherwise ... |
