LR Extended Warranty - Worth Renewing Again?
Hello

Looking for some advice. I have an 06/12 Defender 110XS with 54,000 miles on the clock. It is under extended LR warranty until 30/12/16. The clutch plate was recently covered under the warranty as the springs had broken as opposed to being worn, which was fortunate as it saved me approximately £1100 in parts and labour. LR are looking for £675 to renew the Extended warranty for another year however, I am not sure considering the age of the vehicle whether or not this would be cost effective. As it ages I am sure component failures will increasingly be down to wear and tear.

Has anyone had any experience of costly failures on Defenders of a similar age which were, or indeed were not, covered by a LR extended warranty? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what sort of problems could afflict a vehicle this age which would make them consider the extended warranty a good option?

Cheers

I had the rear halfshafts replaced on the SVX in its sixth year, so in the 3rd and last year of its extended warranty (3 year initial factory warranty plus 3 years of extended warranty). Extended warranty covered the cost entirely, and the invoice sent by my dealer to the insurers was higher than two years extended warranty premium.

Cheers Eric. The rear halfshafts were replaced in year 3 of the original warranty.

As to your question if renewing would be cost effective....
Well, that is exactly what an insurance premium is all about, the insurance company hopes that they will never have to cash out, yourself on the other side of the coin are paying a premium which will cover you IF something unforeseeable would go wrong. The premiums are all a matter of averaging out, in many cases the insurance company will not have to pay out anything or very little, but in some other cases they will have to cover costs which can be a multiple of the amount of a single individual insurance premium amount.
You can gamble that nothing will go wrong anymore in the potential time left of extended warranty, but in case something bad does go wrong, you will then pay the full invoice to repair that event. If you take insurance, they will pay and your outlay will remain limited to your paid premium. It is like playing in the casino really. I took the max 3 years of extended warranty possible, and besides the half shafts, also replacement of a leaking real diff seal was taken up by the extended warranty. I guess in my particular case, their layout during the three years of extended warranty was bigger than the three years premium income from me, certainly as here in Switzerland buying the extended warranty premium also means that your 4th, 5th, 6th year annual maintenance are paid to dealer by them. (The first three years maintenance are also free of charge here in Switzerland, cost of that is fully for account of JLR when you buy a new Defender or other LR/RR)

my 01/13 plate 110 XS is due to need its extended warranty again at the end of Jan... Like yours mine has just had it's clutch renewed under extended warranty (it's the 3rd clutch in 31K !!!)... As you rightly say, what could go wrong next?... especially as you could put just about everything down to wear and tear... I'm having the same thoughts as you and wondering whether I should stump up again or take the gamble...
All I've got to do now is get them to repair the paint and corrosion properly....

Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse...

In Aussie, E.W. is not available on Defender, so after 3 yrs old, ya're on ya're own.
I did however, extend L.R. assist for 12 months.

I have always extended them on all my defenders and it has always proved to be worth while. Latest claim was last year on my SVX the ABS unit failed would have cost circa £1500 to repair so well worth it in my book. 2015 HT XS 90

Thanks for your comments all. Decision time. Probably going to extend again, but want to chip it at some point so would have to cancel if i did that within the year. It is the main family car so need a bit of peace of mind.

Be interested to see what you decide to do Tim.

All the best for the new year everyone.

Kenny
