Heavy Steering
Hi all,

Using the Land Rover again after a while way from her (too long in fact) but the steering seems to be far stiffer than I remember.

In fact it almost struggles to self center on roads which makes me think the power steering is not quite what it was.

I have not touched it in the entire time I have had it, not even changed the oil or topped it up its just always worked fine.

I know its not just me having foggy memory as it used to, at stationary, be able to turn the wheel with one finger through the spoke of the wheel whereas now its noticeably heavier.

Would an oil flush and change be a good first port of call or should I be looking elsewhere? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Change the fluid and rebleed. I was thinking my pump was knackered but after having to do an engine swap the difference was profound due to new fluid. Ed

Hi,
might be worth checking the U/Js on the lower shaft between the column and the steering box, they can seize up, especially if its been stood for a while. Oh and tyre pressures. Very Happy

Mine sounds very similar , I had a leaky box , put a recon unit on and it’s struggled to self centre and harder to steer . I tried replacing the fluid and adjusting the nut for tightness and it’s made no difference , I’ve now learnt to live with it but it’s certainly not as pleasant as it was !

Look forward to hearing the fix ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

check pump is working

oil swap and flush wont hurt as nobody swaps the oil..

check oil for metal!

then it will most likely be a seized steering column uj.

remove and replace if so as once seized they will only do it again even if you free it off

I had a friend that recently had this issue with a VERY seized UJ on either track or tie rod, cant remember which. He was shocked it didn't snap as did not move by hand at all Insta: @thebenjordan4x4

if its a seized uj you will prob hear the pressure relief valve in the PAS system, which means pump is working. seized UJs tend to make it lumpy too. Cheers
