replacing 2.4 head gasket, how hard can it be?
Sad Sadly, my 2009 2.4 puma developed overheating sometime last year, now it has oil in the coolant and a pressurized top radiator hose. I tested the EGR cooler and the water pump, both are good. So I think the puma needs a new head gasket, possibly a new head as well. The mechanic quoted me the price of parts + labour will be around 5000 AUD. I'm thinking about doing it myself, but not sure how hard and how hassle can it be. Can anyone who has done this yourself comment how long it took you to finish the job and what special tools were required in which steps? And is the workshop manual sufficient for doing this or do I need other documents?

Many Thanks.
Wei

Hi Munch,
do you think a faulty oil cooler can cause the radiator top hose pressurized? I don't have to drive hard to get it pressurized, just running at 2000 rpm for a few minutes.

How much pressure are you talking about? The system should run at about 15psi as the cap holds the pressure in.

Does it push water out of the cap when you go for a drive?

Have you tried a coolant pressure test kit?

I didn't pressure-test the cooling system, but when I cruised on highway, the temp gauge rose up to about 3/4 and the pressure pushed steam/water all over the engine bay.

Is the cooling system clogged up with oily coolant, thus making the engine over heat. My self I would pressure test the oil cooler. Or replace it. Flush the cooling system. NONE BIO Washing power / tabs Work really well. And are cheap. Once it`s all clean access the temperature and if required replace the thermostat. Check water pump too. Rad etc.
Check all hoses as the oil in the coolant can cause them to go soft.

If as previously stated the cooling system is running anywhere close 15 psi, you`ve got a big problem, most expansion caps blow off in that area.

Head gaskets do go but it`s normaly the cooler that goes first. Also once it`s all ok change the engine oil, in case any water has got in there. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

Hi!

I was reading this post and I wanted to know what was your problem? Because I have got maybe the same problem. Overheating and some parts in the coolant.

Allready check the hoses and they seems fine. So I'm afraid that could be the oil cooler or worst head gasket!!!

What about yours?

best regards
