I won't be parting with my 110. With regard the price i paid i could of bought a new 110 USW but with the kit on the G4 and already on the orange side i thought why not. One indentical to mine sold through Nene Overland with more miles for 30 grand! As mentioned the colour isn't to everyones taste and you get looked at like you've two heads. To me it's a LR at the end of the day and one that has a little LR history to it. It puts a smile on my face every time i see it and drive it. Thumbs Up

I don't really know anything about the G4 vehicle. Is it different mechanically from a standard? If not, why the price tag?

G4 was the (lame) replacement for Camel Trophey - the G4 vehciles were standard defenders, spec'd up and sprayed in the event corporate orange (Tangiers) and then kitted up (basically by Land Rover) for the off road event.

The last G4 was cancelled (due to the "hard economic times") but actually there were other private reasons as well.

The last event (cancelled) many vehicles were already in production, produced or scheduled - there were many in the centre of Gaydon, waiting, i recall - all models, but never enjoyed freedom!

The G4 events saw the vehciles being sold, eventually as they (LR) saw a trick to make some ££, by LR Dealers at massively inflated prices.

The last event saw only a few being retained for sales or use by Land Rover directly - where as the first event, if you worked for them, you could pick up an event Range Rover for around £15k and a 110 for similar money (although supplied with Kit it wasnt always fitted when i looked to buy a td5 and range rover one).
The Final (none) G4, G4 vehicles, the discounts werent as great (better than the dealers as most went to dealers) but did have all the kit - although defenders were hard to come across as many were given on promises or retained.

I did look at a freelander - which i nearly bought but didnt.

So basically - Std vehicles, sprayed and kitted...latter ones no history - earlier ones loads of it...none as extreeme as Camel Mike

Yes quite right. Absolutely standard vehicles. Just sprayed, kitted up and alot of them sat doing nothing. There were 2 F2, 4 110 USW, and 2 D3 that did the Mongolian Recce for the event which never happened. So some with a little LR history some without. As said its a LR at the end of the day. The G4 Challenge was never meant to be the Camel Trophy! more an adventure sports event with as MSE puts it "lame" off road driving between stages, where as the Camel Tophy as you probably know was a "the way the crow flys" off road event.

Dont get me wrong for many reasons im a true LR supported both the company and products.

But G4 was nothing compared to Camel Trophy - although why Camel Trophy couldnt continue is perfectly valid from a business perspective. Mike

Totally agree MSE, I too am a firm supporter of LR company and products. And yes the G4 was nothing compared to the Camel Trophy but they were meant to be two completely different events. With the one main reason of proving just what a LR can do out of the box / showroom for sales!

Well I also think they look great and I love the colour, beats silver and black - sooo last year Laughing (although I dream of a black or silver one! Sad ) They stand out and will always be valued higher than a standard model.

I think Freelanders are just another euro box, same as all the other main steam 4x4's, a G4 one Shocked Whats the point Rolling with laughter might get over a cobbled road on the way to the event!

Give me a freelander and ill wager ill get it further than you will a defender - someone took me on on that once and lost.

They are amazing vehciles - really dont underestimate them, there are places where they are better than defenders if you know how to drive them. Mike

I'd have any of the LR line up depending on what i needed at the time. There all more than capable of going in the rights hands pretty much any where as mse states. Some do as we know have their limits though. Which is i suppose as an uneducated guess why LR have a range of vehicles which appeal to different areas of the market.

Tangiers Orange is definately a marmite colour though. Did have a Stornaway grey D3 a few years ago, nice colour.

One for Landydubai there are a few G4s forsale at the minute on ebay, JamesFrench has a 52 reg 110 and a TDV6 D3 too.

OK, time to rock the applecart...... Lets see what the Camel trophy was:

Main vehicle.... Std Discovery kitted out by LR and sprayed in Yellow.... sounds similar to G4?

Yes and no..... the earlier days of Camel Trophy and I would agree up to about Mundo Mia/ Kalimantan etc (incidently I have drove down many of the trails in tht event Very Happy ) but if you go to the later events such as Mongolia onwards, I hve done harder off-roading going to Tescos...... Which the even organiser refused to change and one of the main reasons why Land ROver stopped supplying vehicles.

The end of camel came from environmental, political, brand, owners, cig advertising limits etc.

But actually camel trophy weren't standard cars...land rover did a lot to upgrade them mechanically and in design. Something the did ot do in g4 as the wanted STD saleable cars (which is fine) camel was about showing what the can do.

A lot bar the last 1/2 weren't easy...but camel going there opened the area back up. Mike

News to me.

Engine was a 200Tdi followed by 300Tdi..., (They weren't modified in any way)
Mantec snorkel (As on G4)
Mantec Steering guard (As on G4)
Roof rack (as on G4)
Expedition gear (as on G4)
Winch (as on G4)
Mantec load area cage (as on G4)

Mantec Tank guard (Not needed on Defender as much as Discovery)
Twin shock setup on rear (Not needed on Defender as it has a higher losd rating)
Bull bar (Not alowed to fit them on new vehicles)

Safety Devices roll cage.... Probably the only big difference.

The publicity was that they were 'Standard' vehicles, look what they can do.... not here are 'extensivly modified' vehicles, look what they can do after you have spent another small fortune on it.

Rover Group Marketing Director Martin Runnacles wrote:
"We have enjoyed a unique relationship with the Camel Trophy event over almost two decades and it has played a major role in sustaining the image of Land Rover as the manufacturer of the best 4x4's in the world. However, with the changing character of the event it will no longer provide us with an active demonstration of Land Rover's brand essence - limitless capability. We wish Camel Trophy every success with their new format. As for Land Rover, future activities will concentrate on our customer base with the emphasis very much on rugged off-road adventure."

I agree, the end of Camel trophy was because of links to tobaco etc, but Land Rover had already pulled out a year before any of that happened...
