Space to work on vehicles
Trying to think of ideas...

I'd like to start work next year restoring a Series 3 I have, requires a full ground up rebuild. I'm limited for space outside my house, no garage or anything, just a couple of driveway spots in front of the house. At a push I could put up a decently sized shed in the corner of the plot. But as I have nothing to the rear of my house, I wouldn't want the front to look like a scrapyard.

Currently I'm renting a caravan plot on a storage yard for £250 a year. They're happy enough for me to work on it there but there isn't the space to do a chassis swap. A plus being the access to power in the yard. Just down the track from the yard are a couple of back street repair garages, so I could do some kind of deal to give them a bit of work to build up a rolling chassis for me.

The cost of renting a dedicated unit would be too much to justify using it the odd weekend or evening, anyone have any other ideas?

I have thought about approaching local farmers (plenty round here) to see if they had any space in an outbuilding or a bit of land I could put something semi-permanent up on. But then power/water would be restricted. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Talk to a farmer nearby. This is how I did my first rebuild.

In the summer period he had plenty off space, in the winter is was crowded as 80% off his building was full with Potatoes. Roel

I would also endorse the local Farmer route.

Never rebuilt a Land Rover, but I restored a little International Tractor a few years ago and used a spare Farm Building.

The good thing about Farms is the larger the machinery gets, the less useful smaller buildings get so sometimes you can get lucky.

We have redundant buildings on the farm which would be ideal, but a little far for you! However I would would be worth enquiring locally. Put some adverts up in the local Ag stores. Good luck Thumbs Up James

Have you heard of 'rent a ramp' and similar named places? these are garages where you can rent space to work in, they seem to have different but similar names and can be found on google. Although saying that, a chassis swap will probably take a while and may not be cost effective. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Cheers. Gives me an idea that this is definitely a viable idea. I'll start asking around in the new year, appreciate the advice from everyone. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"
