Morning all,
I had a little idea last night and wanted to know people's thoughts. I was thinking of installing a microswitch inside each door that earths the door switch wire when the button is pressed or handle is lifted to open the rear door. When the alarm is activated, attempting to open the locked door by trying it would set off the alarm. If it was me then obviously I would know it was locked so wouldn't try it but an opportunist would set the alarm off and hopefully they would then think twice? I would have thought it would be pretty doable. The door trigger wires just need earthing to trigger the alarm. It should just be a case of mounting the switches. I'll whip the door cards off this weekend and have a look

I think it is an excellent idea and, provided that mounting suitable switches is not too difficult, should be easy to wire up and pretty effective.
Since there is no reason at all why anyone other than you should ever press the door buttons then I think that making the alarm sound is a sensible option. Better still rig a camera in the vehicle to photograph the person doing it. If you proceed with this scheme, I'd be interested to know what switches you use, how you mount them, and how well it works. |

One reservation about this plan: quality of the micro switch.
I used to own a car made by a small UK company; a lot of their parts were bought 'off the shelf', rather than made for them, because their production volume was under 1,000 cars per annum. The one reoccurring issue I had with the car was the micro switches in the doors. Over a five year period, I had to have them replaced three times and I wasn't alone in having this issue - it became a known fault. I don't know who produced the micro switch for them but they did seem to be quite 'fragile' and unreliable; therefore, I'd look to but the best quality ones I could and even then, be wary that they may be an easy fail point and create issues. Sorry to be the devils advocate but they were the bane of my existence and were the last thing I would add to a cars door by choice.  |
