As a little update I have noticed a tapping sound coming from the driver side bank, sounds like cylinder 2 or 4 possibly, the compression test tomorrow should make shed light on this as it sounds line something valve related. There is also some sludge under the filler cap that implies there is water in the oil? Spark plugs 4 and 6 look different from the rest so possibly head gasket? My moms opinion is I'm driving too fast and the high speed misfire is valve bounce Wouldn't explain why it only happens under load. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

After having another opinion on the cold running misfires we have come to the conclusion that it's possibly due to moisture building up under the distributor cap. It didn't feel like a mechanical fault as the rpm would just decrease until you'd drop the clutch and rev it freely a little. It only really sprung up when the weather started getting cold. Also if the engine was turned off and left for a few minutes it wouldn't misfire when you go to drive it again. Is this a problem that anyone else has experienced and if so how could it be fixed? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

drill hole in side of distributor cap and glue in a vacuum tube to it .This reduces build up of condensation.

Tried that over the weekend with no success, also tried sealing a normal dizzy cap to the base with no success. Starting to think it's not moisture related, or at least not in the distributor. This evening when trying to drive it cold the misfires were also accompanied by quite a few backfires. Maybe it's valve train related after all? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Another update: Compression test is done and all cylinders are around 140-150psi so there is no problem there. At least a head doesn't have to come off. The garage suspects it's the carburettors not performing correctly so that's my next target. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I actually have no idea, they dash pots were refilled with oil while at the rolling road so it should be correct? An over hall kit or even a new set completely as I can't have the Land Rover off the road while I p**s about trying to rebuild some carbs. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

A friend of mine had a persistent problem with miss firing and did a lot of what you have done. After a couple of changes in distributors and other parts he found that the gear inside the engine that ran the distributor shaft was worn causing the timing to a bit variable.
He only found it when it got so bad that he would recheck the timing after setting it the day before to find that it was no longer where he had set it and he had to reset it again, the gear had got that bad it was jumping a tooth. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW Volvo S60 T8 Triumph 1200 Rally Explorer G0UBX |
