It's an LED Jim, but not as we know it....!
So,

I got an LED security spotlight on Amazon, £80 or thereabouts. Not long after i fitted it, some of the 'lines' of LEDs started to go. I got a prompt refund from the seller, and they weren't bothered about getting it back so it's just been up there, slowly fading away as more and more of the LEDs failed.

Now, it's completely dead. Replaced it today with a smaller, cheaper thing from Wickes.... let's see how long that lasts..

But... the same mental condition that makes we want to keep on fixing and improving an old Land Rover has kicked in. I've take the light apart. (I kid you not, the reflector is effectively a steak pie dish!) But this is the LED unit.

Two soldered connections, some flexible silicon-like adhesive and some white grease-like stuff which I assume is a heat conducting paste.

The light was supposed to be 80watts - and it was pretty bright to start with. There are 100 LED 'chips' on the panel so presumably 1.25 watts per unit.....? Maybe.

Anyway, my questions goes out to anyone involved in LED trickery like this. Is a unit like this readily available? I assume so - and a lot cheaper than £80. I reckon I could easily put the thing back together again.

As always, any advice gratefully received.

Ta.

D Donald

Chances are pretty high that it's dry solder joints. Might be worth heating with a hot air gun to re flow the solder. Might bring it back to life Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Could certainly try that - never thought to photo the other side - it's actually a piece of aluminium. So the solder joints would be in the middle somewhere? Donald

Thanks Grafty, do you mean the white paste, or the 'aluminium'? Donald

I would imagine that they're mounted on dibond plastic, it's a layer of plastic with a thin layer of aluminium bonded on each side.

Without seeing it in person it's hard to tell.... 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Yea - that occurred to me too! Would be absolutely blinding!

Here's the other side of it. Without getting a magnifying glass onto it, it does look like it's a one piece thing rather than a sandwich or laminate but I guess not.

Reckon the heat gun would still work here?

If not, what should I google to find a replacement? Donald

Looks like I can see layers there so could be dibond. Heat gun on the led side. Not too much heat but enough to melt the solder. I suppose as it's broken already you have nothing to loose Thumbs Up
