In a way I am looking forward to the self driving car by simple virtue of it making the roads safer for people like me who actually take driving seriously, in so much as the epic amount of road users who are utterly disinterested in driving but need to get from a to b and don't offer the activity the level of concentration it requires. Only such a thing already exists, it is called a train or a bus, travelling without thinking. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

That's all I need, some young scroat tailgating me at 70mph so he can stay in my hotspot and surf the net. So not only do we have idiots texting and phoning whilst driving but they're now going to be doing their online shopping as well. It's a good job we're moving to driverless cars, they'll be a darn sight safer than been driven by a tailgating. iPhoning nerd. Defender 90XS SW

I get the impression that it's a pretty common feature these days.
Land Rover and Vauxhall have been advertising it at least.

I have to say it's quite neat that my boss's Tesla updates itself overnight sometimes and that has a built in browser but no hotspot.

Just a wild guess, but it might be designed for use by passengers and not drivers? Rolling Eyes

Think positively, it GREATLY increases the attack surface of the vehicle thereby facilitating many forms of hacker attack, such as ransom demands.

The more that veficle technology "evolves", the more inclined I become to go back to the Series 1!

It's to enable Dad, Mum and up to five kids to travel in their self driving car and monitor their journey's progress without looking away from their tablets or smartphones, firing off Tweets and so-on when something "Oh! my actual God" interesting is spotted.

If JLR are monitoring Defender2, I think this WiFi hotspot idea may be a definate selling point for the new Defender, along with Genuine Land Rover accessories like GPS units suitable for fitment to sheep, a Border Collie shaped drone and a "One Man and His Drone" app. This would enable farmers to control flocks with an iPad from their shiny new Defenders. Result.

Simply means that market researchers have established that it's what today's mass consumers want. If they'd established that today's mass consumer wanted Defenders, JLR would still be making 'em.

It comes to something when wifi is the best feature!!!

The older I get, the more I realise 'less is more'.

So you need another Cell Providers Sim with large or unlimited data for your Car too ? So you can connect to it with your smartphones which already have Data connections in the vast majority of cases surely.

Well that's me sold where do I sign up...........

NOT. 3 Landrovers

So, with two kids aged 9 and 11 who have iPads for school I think this is a great development. I can buy an EE wifi dooberry for the car / 110 and when we go on holiday the kids can look at trial bikes / defenders vs G-Wagons / new hockey sticks to their hearts content whilst I blat / trundle from Calais to the Alps. Marvellous.
