Sorry, no specific experience of the external roll cage or the insurance situation but....
One of them you should tell because of the potential consequences of not doing so. The other you shouldn't tell because of the potential consequences of doing so. Only you can decide which scenario applies to which party Good luck with those difficult conversations and more importantly with the installation |

When I bought my cage and told her what it cost, she asked How Much ?!! Then I asked: Am I worth it? And that was the end off the discussion.

you will not be getting a roll cage but an over-engineered roof rack
as long as it is not internal. its just a roof rack |

^^ Would my insurance company see it that way?
Should point out, it's not for serious off-roading, I don't expect to roll over and drive away, it's more sacrificial in nature and accordingly even as an over-engineered roof rack (that connects (via flanged joints) to the chassis) it will provide more protection than standard. (and a light duty rack..) Also, I'd opt for the version that includes the internal structure around the B-pillars, and look at a cross brace somewhere, likely aft of the mid seat row (the ease and utility of installing yet to be fully investigated however). And finally, it was advice of other members that a SD cage would be a better option than a home-brew cage that I was considering at the time. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Unfortunately I am worth much more dead than alive so will never be able to pitch a rollcage installation to my significant other half

I really don't understand why insurance companies either hike the premium or won't even insure defenders with roll cages, surely in an accident it will give them more recoverable vehicles or parts so save them money and safer for the defender owner. Ray

^^ Agree.
On the plus side, fitting a cage: 1) makes the vehicle statistically less likely to be stolen 2) Reduces the likelihood and magnitude of personal injury payouts to occupants 3) Potentially increases the residual value of an insurance write-off (although this is likely to be marginal). I imagine also that in general there is a smaller proportion of Defenders with cages involved in accidents than Defenders without, since the fact that a driver is thoughtful enough to fit a cage probably indicates that he is more disposed to drive safely. Point 2 above is probably the most significant benefit from an insurance perspective. However on the minus side, I imagine that insurance companies have ample statistics to demonstrate that across all vehicle types, those with cages are more likely to be driven in an irresponsible manner by a pimply knobhead and be the cause of substantial payouts. Since (a) this presumption generates more income from premia than the four good points above, and (b) insurance companies now seem incapable of making informed decisions and rely totally on "the computer" telling them what to do, I suspect that this view prevails. |

The mere addition of a raised air intake invalidates many insurances so I think you should be clear and ask your insurance company before ordering a roll cage.

A snorkel is an accessory so no biggie with the insurance company unless you want to make it such.
Ive said this before, the underwriters (when my car was written off by a drunk driver when parked) were eye opening about the difference. A roll cage you should really tell them as it is a material and significant change (increased pedestrian risk etc etc) many things are just accessories and no need to tell them, unless you tell them your putting a roof rack on etc etc Mike |

Having had a spectacular near fatal crash in a defender, and seeing just how vulnerable you are in one, roll cage would certainly be on my list if/when I get another.
