I had a go at fitting my D44 transmission guard at the weekend.
Was prepared for the transfer box oil to fall out when replacing the bolts with the supplied studs but when it came to it, I couldn't get the new studs into the transfer box as the handbrake backplate is too close. Only tried one bolt (the highest one) so just put it back in and topped the oil up again. Has anyone worked out how to do this without removing the handbrake (and I assume rear prop shaft)? You need to shorten the bolts unfortunately. Either that or take the handbrake drum off. I'm going to fit an X-brake so it should be less of a problem. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

I thought they looked longer than the standard bolt when it came out but my attention was rather taken up by trying to catch the oil leaking out
Think I'll go down that route as it's got to be easier than unbolting everything. I was also thinking about an X-Brake but not just yet as In the last month I've had to shell out for my new wheels and tyres, a 24,000 mile service and the insurance renewal Next month it's the tax, insurance and a new set of tyres for the BMW And that still leaves the engine rebuild on the CCM to do... it never ends MAD COW 2007 90 Hard Top - 2009 BMW F800GS - 2002 CCM 604E Dual Sport Project90 |

Only reason I had is that they don't hang down as far as the standard hand brake, not that relevant on most Defenders but the transfer box and brake on Pumas does sit lower (hence the decision to get the transmission guard).
Oh yes they don't fill up with mud either, not that that has particularly caused me any grief before. Having to clean the brake out every now and then at least means you check on the state of the shoes periodically. MAD COW 2007 90 Hard Top - 2009 BMW F800GS - 2002 CCM 604E Dual Sport Project90 |

I hear a few people comment on filling up with mud - never had that problem, but the solution (in advance) on the discovery and the v8 was to remove the drum and drill 2 small holes in it, that allows the crud to drain.
Series land rovers had them early on and it works a treat...never had an issue and never thus had to clean one! Mike |

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'll be fitting one of these in a few days.
How much do the new rear bolts need to be trimmed, I'd rather do this ready to fit than remove one and then cut to size whilst the oil empties. Thanks Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Click image to enlarge Isn't bolting something to the transfer box just loading those small points with all the forces the guard is going to encounter? |

Not really as it's bolted front and back so the load would be spread and certainly no more that it would if it got clouted with a big rock. Craig Rogers

OK - I thought the point of a guard would be to stop it getting any clout at all!
Wouldn't something like this from Safari Equip be better - I think it hangs off the chassis so gets the relatively delicate bits completely out of harms way: Click image to enlarge |

Saw the SE one but decided against it due to the foot print of it which could give other clearance issues. The d44 one is more of a slider when going over areas with less clearance rather than to bash the crap out of it, such as dragging over the centre bank of deep ruts.
Although the transmission is lower, it's not crazy low and I've never caught it on anything, but for £60 it's peice of mind. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |
