Ammo Speaker box - winter project -
OK some may have seen this...

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic49974....30c92c3bf6

Now its cold, dark and horrible most evenings, my Sankey will have to wait and the soundproofing of my car is on a do it when I have some decent weather.

So a mini project for our camping trips and just as I like the look of them...

Its based on a used ammunition box and you can basically make it how ever you like with I have found many web sites with ideas.

My Ammo box has arrived.

I've started measuring out and marking the spaces for sockets etc.

I'm sourcing bits slowly but surely. PC fan case grill covers...

As I'm trying to keep the costs down and having searched most of the bits I need a lot are coming on a slow boat from China. Its quite interesting getting home from work and having bits and bobs delivered Smile

Speakers - I have not decided what to use yet, they pretty much have to be 4" (10cm) and Pioneer seem a good price point? However I used to have Rockford Fosgate years go when I was into ICE.. so still quite like them?

Also Battery? from searching this seems but I'm not up on electronics what do people think?

Looking at doing similar myself with an old pelicase.

If you Google diy boombox there is loads of info. I have just ordered my amp which is an smsl sa-36.

Hoping to use some 6x9 speakers.

I need a power supply at this outputm which will be ok on mains but I want to run on a battery also..

So thinking something like this but I'm unsure (12v 4.5AH (4.5))

Driveway took over my time this weekend, pic-axe and several trips to tip in the truck with rubble....

Anyway managed to get a metal jigsaw blade and had a go at cutting the holes...

1) Wear Googles
2) Its very loud... I read it will be on the net its like someone is using a machine gun.. quite apt.

Anyway quite impressed with two holes...

Small drill to begin with..

Then I'm off...

Look ok to me, will find my dremel tool and go round to clean the edges off next.

Totally watching with interest Cool

You should buy everything in bulk

Then supply a DIY kit, delivered in the ammo box. I'm sure they'll sell.

You are way ahead of me! I am just finishing a trailer refurb before I get onto my boombox.

You might want to dynamat the inside of the ammo box to stop any vibrations.

My plan is to build into a pelicase with the speakers/amp mounted in mdf all behind the lid so you open it when using it.
I have something like this:

So far my plans include:

Amp: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361083922577 Went for simplistic approach.

Battery and Charger: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yuasa-NP7-12-lead...35-7364703

Charger will be fitted into the pelicase and battery connected by a double pole switch so you can switch between run and charge: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281829466790

USB and Voltmeter for charging phone and monitoring the battery. Will probably have a switch on this as it will always have a current draw. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302025267353

Speakers – I was going to use some Alpine 6x9’s but have just remembered I have some old technic speakers in the garage so if they work with the amp I will strip those down and use.

I was also thinking of including some disco lights but will see how much space I have!

Hi ScotM,

At least with that case you have a lot more room Smile The ammo box its small and trying to work out what can fit in and where is taking a bit of time.

My peli case has this lot in it Smile oooh and my Sankey is on hold at the moment as its too horrible outside Very Happy

I was thinking of using the sound deadening I have left from my truck, initial idea was to build a MDF box inside the ammo box however the sound proofing and play around with a foam 'filler' seems to work according to my interweb research. Due to space a box within this ammo box would mean even less room for the other stuff.

My question as I've not electronic know how, how do I wire a switch that allows the charger or the battery to power the amp?

Weather rubbish up here - with all the cloud and rain it has been like someone switched the lights off instead of moving the clocks back on hour last weekend.

You need a latching Dual Pole Dual Throw (DPDT) switch like the one I put in the link above.

Hopefully this little sketch will explain how to wire it.

Just noticed I failed to label battery - as terminal 4 in the diagram but I am expect you noticed that!

Small update as after I ran out of steam with the pic axe on the front drive I came in,

Amp arrived to took it apart.

sound proofing the inside although had to remove the lid bit as I jigsawed out the amp and it was not sitting flush.

Jig sawed out the gap for the amp and used a dremel to clean the cut for the speakers

Test fit, I will secure it from the inside not the white connectors (number plate holders) Should look neater, use these just to hold it in place.

will use these brackets and neaten up where I removed the sound proofing, should look better after a bit of phaffing Smile

Having no speakers to try was a bit annoying.. they should arrive soon though,

Have an idea on the front panel to make it less obvious. Then some other ideas to hold the charger etc... Quite enjoyed messing about with it this afternoon Smile

OK so attached the amp to the brackets and drilled through the case to mount securely.

added the sound proofing and made it look neater and also clips ready for the cables

Will have to drill a hole for power as currently its held in with double sided.

Its getting there.... need speakers !!!
