Great vehicle all round. My major problem being that the Mrs. has the funny notion that it is hers. Sadly that is not covered by the three year warranty. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I had a few issues with my 07 90 Hardtop (Vac Pump, Clutch, EGR Valves, New Gearbox) all done under Warranty and since then no probs (looks for lump of wood) so the Puma has turned out to be one of my better buys and in the Snow let me get on working and earn a living.
Of course its build quality could be better and a lack of drafts would be nice, but a Heater that works sort of makes up for it lol. I wouldnt be without one now, great all round Work Horse. |

Getting back to the original question...
Mine is coming up to 100 000 km in Africa (many have been off road, over rough mountains, bashing through streams, etc) and it's been fine. Yes, i had the clutch replaced a long time ago, but it's been fine since then. Would i take it up to the Congo Jungle? No, i'd get a vehicle with less electronics... www.ralton.co.za |

My '07 110 XS CSW was pretty good bar the usual clutch issue and one or two other minor issues which were always addressed under warranty. Touch wood the new one seems ok. Steve.

Thick question - what's an EGR valve and what happens when it goes?! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

I think it means Exhaust Gas Return valve - it's to push the fumes back through the system to clean them up a bit? I know some guys are blanking this valve off - search the forum, it should be easy to find, it's a large thread. www.ralton.co.za

Thanks for the replies folks. The thread is giving a good balanced view and it appears the problems are not that bad or widespread and what has gone wrong has been easily resolved. I would prefer to buy a Defender I am really enthusiastic about and put up with a few problems rather than buy a Jap car I have no interest in and be really annoyed IF it does go wrong - I have experienced problems with two vehicles and will never go back to Jap!
On the majority of cars you can clean up the EGR valve with carburetor cleaner and put it straight back in! They just get coked up a bit It's easy money for dodgy garages, they clean it up but charge £400 for a replacement that never went in |

One thing that seemed to work for me (and some others on here) - Despite my post about screeching sound - Was to buy an ex-demo car off a decent dealer.
The cars aren't allowed to be sold on before three months have passed, and my 110 had done 4000 miles in that time. As a result, I'm guessing that most of the usual annoying niggles had been sorted, as it would be embarrassing to demo otherwise! 2010 110 XS USW (the slow one) 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (the fast one) 2005 Ducati ST3 1954 Sunbeam S8 |

I think the thing with Landies is the passion they ignite in owners.
I've had plenty of uber reliable cars in the past but many have simply bored me. I'm expecting something to go wrong with our Landy (it's been well looked after and was bought at 3 years old with 37k miles a month or so ago) but as long as it's not too tragic, I'm not worried. It's covered by a Used Approved Warranty (which has some restrictions - not as comprehensive as the 3 year one but still covers most things) which helps but I still expect to spend a bit looking after it. I'm not fussed - don't buy an LR if you can't stand/afford spending on a bit of TLC. DO grin every time you see it, drive it, wash it. Not many vehicles do that, however reliable or capable they may be. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, allows exhaust gas back into the inlet manifold on overrun, thus saving fuel (and reducing emissions). If it sticks/breaks you get exhaust gas on the inlet when you try to accelerate, which having already been burnt does not burn very efficiently as all the oxygen is gone.
Long and short is you don't go anywhere. At least its not as bad as the TDV6 which has two to break (one on each bank), as they eventually do... Blanking them off just means you remove the point of failure, at the cost of economy and emissions. Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |

Just ticked over 20k on my 2008 USW. It's had a new clutch and some minor tweaks on warranty, but nothing major *touches wood* mechanically.
The disappointing aspects are the rust spots under the rubber seals on the rear door and on the bulkhead where it meets the wing. All being fixed under warranty as we speak though. Still considering selling when the warranty runs out though and buying something cheaper to run - narked about the reclassification on the road tax for USWs and Mr Cameron's lovely rising Diesel profits |

Reclassification on road tax? I though they were still 200 a year like all the rest, as they are all commercials now? I know older ones were (oddly) classed as cars though. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |
