It could be the switch or a problem with the dim dip relay.

A common fault is the dip/main beam stalk burning out usually caused by overloading with auxilliary lamps not going correctly through a relay. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Would think it to be the main light swych it's self, they start to be temperamental as the plastic starts to melt

I recently had a probelm with my dip beam spontaneously going out, caused by the dip/flasher switch on the column overheating and melting. It surprised me since all I have read tells me that the lights are now wired via relays (at last!) and therefore there shoudl be no high currents in the dipswitch.
What I think happened is that gradually the switch contacts degraded through dirt or oxide with a resulting high impedance causeing heat, then the plastic body of the switch melted enought to allow the contacts to move apart. For a temporary repair I simply cleaned the contacts then bent them back to the right place, and it's been OK since. I do now have a new switch to fit when time permits. One temporary solution which crossed my mind during a long night journey with the dip beam not working, was than by shorting out the dim-dip relay (if you have one) the dip beam should come on with the sidelights. This woudl at least provide a "get home" solution, and would also confirm that the fault was the switch. Your symptoms woudl certainly make me look at the dip/flasher switch as the first suspect. |

today i changed both switches main switch and the whole section switch of the dim switch, and they went out twice on my way home for a minute or so i couldnt believe it, both switches are even wired up to extra relays now to take the load off the switch.
Could it be that some kind of solenoid is heating up maybe? Thanks |
