Gearbox rattle
As the title suggests, the gearbox makes a rattling noise at idle.
Depress the clutch and it stops, lift clutch and its back.
Doesn't seem to do it when it's in gear.

Any ideas?

Yep, Thats the dreaded clutch rattle... If it's under warranty. Get it fired into the dealer for replacement..

It can't be the clutch Morepower as its just been replaced.

Hmmmmm.

It was rattling before the new clutch, and exactly the same after it.

Got to be gearbox, or the garage didn't replace the clutch as they said they did... 300tdi 90 1996.

If the clutch has been replaced, Then it could be the input shaft bearing is on it's way out...Some of the better informed on here maybe able to advise on other options... Do you know if the clutch was replaced with the later type?

Good luck

If it's the 300tdi in your sig that we're talking about, then it could be the clutch release bearing.

To be honest, I'd be taking it back to the garage and telling them to sort it out. Darren

My old 2.5 NA 90 rattled for the 10 years I and a friend owned it, and it was used hard, regularly, for trialling and towing a 3 ton burger van trailer. It rattled with an old knackered clutch in it, and the same with a brand new genuine one, with new release bearing. It had the LT77s box (presuming yours is R380) but the same transfer box. Neither box received any maintenance except oil changes, and no debris was produced. My 110 200 Tdi did the same.

I'm not saying that your gearbox is necessarily fine, just that they can rattle for years and still function perfectly. The one in my Puma also rattles intermittently but it's only going to be investigated when it either goes bang or becomes unusable.

IMHO life is too short to be striving to attain perfection from a vehicle that wasn't perfect from the factory ....

I agree Thon, but just wondered if I had a big bill coming. It appears not, thanks Rally Steve, a very interesting link. I can sleep easy now. Very Happy 300tdi 90 1996.
