Hello chums,
Bit of a dilemma. Have broken down in a service station. Def was running fine, stopped for a few supplies and got back in. Turned key, lights came on, waited for heater light to extinguish. Turned key to fire up and all lights cut out, Def dead. Went through the same process, same results. After a number of attempts, totally dead. No lights, no nothing. Couple of points, first that I have checked connections on battery and they seem good. Second, no lethargy in firing up previously, so not sure if dad battery is a reason, seemed to be more than enough juice. Indeed fired up first time this morning and we had frost Thirdly, on getting in and out, dash lights flickered on and off when the door slammed. On setting this, but the dash binnacle and got similar response. But each time the last turn of the key killed everything. Opened up ignition cover and all wires seem to be connected, so now, with absolutely no lights whatsoever, I'm stumped. FYI, I have no immobiliser turned on, but even if I did, not sure why all the lights and electrics would die. Any thoughts before I organise recovery? Ta. Following on, can a battery simply die with no apparent warning? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Usually along the passenger side of the vehicle going from the inside of the chassis rail on to a suitable bolt on the engine, usually around the sump area. The gearbox one will be the same, from the chassis to a suitable bolt on the gearbox

Found the chassis end of the earth, looks clean and is certainly properly attached. Is the other end in the battery box as everything is attached. Dead battery? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Yes! The battery over time silts up as the electrolytic plates corrode. Eventually when and if the silt reaches the bottom of the plates the cells short out. Carrying out an annual deep cycle charge or load test is not indicative of a serviceable battery as it could potentially short out the very next day. In certain engineering applications batteries are replaced every 5 years irrespective of condition. Ironically enough mine threw it's hand in at 5 years on the Landy anyway. How old is yours? A voltage check would tell. No use if you haven't a multimeter to hand though. Being a sparky I have one with me irrespective of what vehicle I'm in. Perhaps consider fitting a Scangauge as you can monitor it all the time? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! Last edited by K9F on 12th Oct 2016 10:26am. Edited 1 time in total |

Are there no lights, power anywhere..?
I don't have a Puma, but don't they have a BIG fuse to protect the battery..? Could that have blown, come lose...? Good luck... cheers simon |

Thanks K9F. Earth seems clean both ends, in answer to Couplands, no lights anywhere but not sure it's the fuse as lights came on and off, on and off a number of times, then died. Just asked a colleague who drove it all last week and she had the same problem. Resolved when rocking or slamming the door, so does make me question K9Fs silt suggestion. Rock it, move the silt, get connection and fire up etc etc. Likewise getting in and slamming door. Think I'll have to try new battery, but everything is closed until 1400h. What a waste of a day. Thanks for help so far. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Poor show from your colleague for not getting it fixed or at least reporting it as a fault last week IMHO.

Just check the small wire to the starter motor, give it a good wriggle or pull it off and squeeze it up with some pliers. Generally when you turn to the start position on the key on most motors it puts all the power to the starter relay and on may cars the lights on the dash go out so no completion of the starter circuit at the starter motor you can tun the key and the dash lights will go out but no turning over of the engine
