Ouch.
I have 1990 Tdi CSW. This summer I fitted a pair of those front of rear wheels mud shields to stop all of the crud being packed on top of the cross members. Mine were not as bad as the photos but I would not hesitate in recommending the shields. I applied Dinatrol cavity wax to the box section and underseal to the whole area before fitting the guards |

When I have used a Land Rover in the crud I always used to wash off the underneath especially where said crud would build up. Preventative maintenance works wonders

You will find a bung underneath if you get under the vehicle. Same with the B post. Always worth taking these out and flushing if you have done any serious wading/offroading. Careful with flushing the B post as it opens up inside the cab.
