Proven strongest universal joint?
I am aware certain brand names have been bought by makers of poor quality UJs. Can anyone recommend a current make of UJ that is strong and will not break under heavy usage? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

You are looking for the names GKN or hardy spicer. Ideally anything from a main supplier that puts a 'G' after the part number. The key to keep them going is regular greasing inline with the severe duty regime.

I am afraid that with UJs it is not that simple.

GKN/Hardy Spicer/whatever they are called this week will make UJs in the 'fitment' that the Land Rover takes in a variety of different guises, depending on the duty level of the application. So they will make one for Land Rover, but they will also make them for Britpart, Bearmach, Allmakes, and who knows else. All the same size/fitment, and all made by GKN/HS and so sellable as 'OEM' - but all at different levels of quality/duty rating.

Buy an 'OEM' UJ and you will get a GKN/HS part, however compare that to the Land Rover GKN/HS part and you will see that the latter has bigger rollers in the bearings - i.e. it's built to a higher spec. As far as I am aware the only way to get the proper spec UJs is to buy Land Rover ones, unless someone has found them under a different number at the bearings place or the like.

Remember also that OEM simply means that it is made by 'a company' that has at one time made 'some parts' for 'any vehicle' - it doesn't mean it made that specific part or even parts for Land Rover.

So, in answer to your question, Land Rover is the best brand to buy. Grease them every 6,000 miles and you will get many miles of service from them.

Thank you. Please do you know the part number for the Land Rover UJ, and I will try to get one from a site sponsor. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world.
