If you're saying that the drop arm has either come off the box, or is slipping on the output shaft, then I'd be very wary about reusing the box due to the likelihood that the splines are damaged. If you can establish beyond doubt that both male and female parts are undamaged, then you should be able to reuse them.

The shaft has dropped out of the box (not entirely but not moving when steering wheel moved) the beast is going nowhere tonight. Just trying to strip it out now to get a replacement fitted tomorrow. The drop arm was new a few months ago for the mot and all splines were good. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Replacement reconditioned box sourced just need to find time a bit later to fit it. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.
