An almost complete lack of power!
When mine stopped actuating (due to a chafed harness) I was down to second on hills I can usually climb in 5th. |

Its suffering from a complete loss of power, but only under certain conditions!
My wife runs it to work and back everyday and it is fine, which is 20 mile round trip. But on anything longer with sustained use of the turbo, say on a longish climb on a motorway it suffers from complete power loss. But the bizarre thing is if you stop, turn the engine off then on again it sorts itself out....for a while, then it happens again. On occasion you can hear a high pitched whine as tries to close, but I'm not sure if this is a sticky turbo causing it to struggle or simply a broken/faulty actuator. I thought it was possibly the wiring, but can't find any sign of wear. Blackwolf, can you tell me where yours had chafed? Frankly, its driving me nuts! |

Is it a sudden loss in power, have you read the fault codes and are you sure it's a turbo actuator?
The symptoms you've described can be caused by other things too. |

My engine harness had chafed at every single point where it contacted the engine, the actual break was in one of the feedback signal wires from the actuator stepper motor and was located where the harness is close to the vac pump.
Have you checked that the turbo vane ring is free? A common-ish problem is that it becomes sticky. Check by disconnecting the actuator linkage and moving it manually, it should be so free moving it that it feels broken, as though it isn't doing anything. Also check that the actuator is "parking" in mid position. Quite often actuator or turbo problems will result in it parking in one extreme position or the other. If I recall correctly the actuator will be at the upper extreme of travel for zero boost, and lower for max boost. Most actuator failures will cause the system to fail in the minimum position since it is a safer failure mode. |

Hi Blackwolf, many thanks indeed!
I tried the disconnection of the actuator and it is free until the bottom then it is stiff, so maybe it is the vane ring is causing the issue. Do you know if this is serviceable or will it mean replacing the turbo? Sorry for all the questions! Cheers, Leon |

Not sure, to be honest, but I suspect it's not serviceable. A turbo specialist could overhaul it, I am sure.
