Oil Pressure
Does anyone know the normal operating range for engine oil pressure for a 2.4 TDCI?

Mine has been running between 4-5 bar (monitored by a MadMan gauge) till recently, when it started exhibiting the following weird behaviour:

(1) When cold it would run a lot higher --> between 7-8 bar... Whilst it is seemingly normal for the pressure to be higher when oil is cold, because of higher viscosity, it remain at those levels for up to 20mins, and then suddenly drop to normal levels. I would expect the pressure to drop gradually, as the temp increases.
(2) The oil pressure increases with the engine speed, but when I come off the throttle, it drops very slowly.
(3) This evening, when I started the engine, the pressure went up to 10 bar, even though I had used the car about an hour earlier, so was not cold (oil temp was 23degC). Alarmed, I turned the engine off, and despite the engine NOT running, the oil pressure stayed at around 6 bar!! It did not drop for a few mins, at which point I took the other car. When I got back a few hrs later, the oil pressure was back to 0 (engine off).

Note: There are no indications or warnings on the dashboard, but the Madman goes to alarm above 8 bar.

Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? Is there some sort of thermostat and oil bypass for cold temps that could affecting the oil pressure?

Appreciate any insights or advice!

Red, I also have had issues with the Madman oil pressure sender: I replaced it 3 times in 3 years.

Finally, the last time, we took an extension hose and fitted the unit further away from the sump. Two years later and it's still going strong, so I can only assume that the high temperature close to the sump was causing issues.

Also, check your earth points, as a bad earth connection will affect the readings.

My 2.4, when at operating temperature, will show 4.5-4.9 at 100kmh, and around 5.2 at 120kmh (highway).

my bets guess is that you need a new sender! --

Naks - that's exactly what I'm hoping. The behaviour seems too erratic for it to be anything physical.
Today I turned the ignition on after letting leaving the car off for a while, and it showed oil pressure at 6.7 bar!
As soon as I cranked the engine, it dropped to 3.5 bar...

Can't imagine any scenario where oil pressure remains that high with the engine off for a few hours!

Did you replace your sensor with a Madman supplied one, or something else?

PS - thanks for the comprehensive reply and sharing your experience!

red, the pressure sender is a VDO one, I just got replacement units from Madman.

Sorry, I don't have the part numbers, but I'm sure if you email them they will supply the part number?

Also, get an extension hose and place the new sender at least 10-15cm away from the sump. --
