Bought my second hand Defender 110 CSW from Harwoods in Edenbridge last year, and whilst walking around the vehicle I asked if there was anything in the car's history I should be aware of. To which the response was "No No No"
Then recently I was talking to a Harwoods mechanic about the amount of mud in the seat base unit and he asked if my truck was silver, to which I responded "why yes it is". "Ah right, that'll be an Land Rover Experience vehicle then" was his response. I've since asked Harwoods for the history to find out if it was, but should I be concerned? I know it's made for playing off road, but I've done driving days is the past and I ragged the balls off the cars being used! Should I push Harwoods or just move on? |

I bought a silver 110 XS SW from a dealer, started getting all kinds of whirring and grinding noises from the drivetrain, closer inspection revealed the diffs and transfer box were full of very fine silt and metal filings. A candid conversation with the general manager and I had a brilliant deal on the black demo which was on their forecourt. 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Many on here advocate that they are just made for that, built for purpose, so nothing to worry about I guess.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

'Karma' is what I call it. I would base the worry on whether you think you got a good deal or whether it was sold under false pretences? It being used as it was is that deemed as 'Something you 'should' have really been made aware of' when you asked the question? Are you are worried based on your own driving? Not sure how well supervised the 'experience' days are or whether they have free-reign to rag the ball off? I would say it's a bit late considering nearly a year has passed as well. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Silver or white ones and normally reg beginning with O.
Hi low box gets a work out but probably means it works better than one that's always in high. Unless somethings up with it, it was doing a job it was designed for. They only ever did 5k and then swapped out. 1951 80" S1 2.0 1995 110 300TDI 1995 90 300TDI |

It would be prudent to change all the oils in every box , just in case it has been wading through silt everyday. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

So unless the vehicle has regularly been waded in crud that is deeper than the breather height (which is unlikely given how carefully the LRE courses are engineered for effect), why on earth would "every box" contain silt? They're sealed to keep the oil in, at least on the whole, and the dirt out. The vehicle has been doing what it is designed to do.
I would probably thoroughly flush the chassis and box sections to get any remaining mud out, though. Which would you rather buy, an ex-LRE vehicle with a history of supervised usage, dealer servicing, and probably low mileage, or a totally unknown quantity which could have been ragged mercilessly and not serviced, then cleaned up for the forecourt? Myself, I'd take the LRE vehicle anytime. Last edited by blackwolf on 11th Oct 2016 8:59am. Edited 1 time in total |

I'm liking the comments a lot and certainly feel a bit more chilled about it. Only concern is that the clutch feels like it's on it's way out but by the sounds of things that's just as common for cars that have been pampered. But we won't get into that subject. I'll let you know what harwoods have to say and meanwhile I'll keep on digging the clay out.
