There are no factory tinted rear windows with a Defender. At least not the central large rear window in the door, which when you ticked the box for the factory tinted windows was left untinted. The two small rear windows at the side in the rear, the side windows from the B-pillar onward, and the Alpine windows all were tinted, but not the central window in the 3rd or 5th door. JLR must have had a reason for doing so. Also read below thread.... Eric http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30099....ed+windows You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw Last edited by ericvv on 27th Sep 2016 4:18pm. Sorry when I say factory I didn't mean JLR factory, I mean any factory made tinted glass rather than the after market tinted film, as we have on our other Defender.

As said, I think JLR know what and why they were leaving the factory rear door window untinted. However, to make you feel better, we have plenty of high spec expensive Merc G Class on the road here with factory (not after market) rear windows tinted, and with those the window in the rear door is also tinted. Their LED 3rd brake light is behind that tinted glass, and I am always amazed how poor the light production of that not unimportant brake light is with those.
But again, in France brake lights must all be optional I think based on what I see on our roads here, so you probably should not worry too much. ![]() http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

![]() I'd like to read the actual regulation on this but cant seem to find anything about it at the moment. I must say that I dont think the tint has much effect of the brightness at all when I compare our two Defenders. The biggest difference is when you compare it to the LED lights which are much brighter, hence me considering ordering this new LED brake light to replace the last non LED light on the car. |

A 3rd brake light or HLBL I'm pretty sure is known as supplementary lighting as the rear tail / brake lights are obligatory.
But if it is 'E' marked the light would have been either tested affixed to screen or prior to fitting. If attached to screen then no problem, if tested prior to fitting then that's no different to timing your obligatory lights as they are legally void as not used as designed for purpose. Similar to using LED's in incandescent fittings. If the 'E' mark is on the glass by the light I'd say probably fine and tested affixed. If not maybe the light was prior tested. Not an easy one to define! I think we need a 'GB' mark shortly or BS standard. ![]() β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

I've got Masai down the side windows but I haven't got round to fitting the rear ones yet, they still just have the film I put on ages ago. Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

Our other Defender has the film and you do need to look closely to see the difference. Just in a few places around the edges you can tell.

If a light is fitted, it needs to work and fully fulfil E-regulations.
What does the e-mark on the window say? It says, that the glass is generally good for road vehicle use in safety and transparency etc. It does not provide any vehicle specific (Defender) allowance to fit. If an e-marked window does not work together with a factory fitted homologated brakelight it is not allowed to be fitted. Example: our LED side repeater is generally E-marked as side repeater. it directly fits into a existing hole on a Defender fender BUT it can be fitted to any road vehicle. But only as a side repeater, not as rear or front indicator. And there are fitting rules for side repeaters as heigth, visibility etc. WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

Yes I have your side LED side repeaters fitted to my car. I have the smoked lens which looks great against the Corris grey body.
Do the same regulations apply to the side repeaters as the rear top light? Because as with the rear tinted glass, the smoked lens on the repeater obviously reduces the brightness of the lamp somewhat. |

With all our LED products the brighness of the LEDs is adjusted to the lens. That means the orange LEDs in a black repater shine brighter (compared to a white one) to compensate the tinted lens. WANTED:
