I'm surprised by that. You'd think they'd be up for earning money wherever it comes from!

Invoices, taxes, agreements with contracters,...
In Belgium it also depends on the TVA number you requested. Depending on that you are or not allowed to sell to a private person.
In theory I'm not even allowed to construct myself something like a rooftent for a vehicle. It must be done by an approved installer. 28/02 - Loss of a good friend...

Ah ok - thats a real hurdle to overcome!

Didn't realise it was that restrictive over there.

I know this post has been quiet for a long time, but just wanted to say well done! Fantastic conversion. I'm currently trying to sell my 300Tdi powered Disco 2 to fund the purchase of a Defender 130 that I'd love to convert to a station wagon with a lifting roof to sleep my family of 4.

Sadly I haven't the skills to self-build, but I think I'd still save money by asking a fabricator or conversion specialist to build me a roof rather than buying off the shelf, especially as it would include the 130 station wagon conversion.

Any more photos John?

Hello chaps!

Aye the build is still going on. Glad its inspired you Guy. I'm currently fabricating hard sides that will go down the outside. The fabric is great in summer but its not so good in winter - cold, and very noisy when its windy. So I've played around with several options and the most successful is frames down each side attached to lifting roof and a cunning plan for the sealing of it and the back door 'problem' (or more simply put - how will the back door still open when the roof is down!).

More later - but here's where its heading...

Fantastic!

Fair play to you John!

I absolutely love my Discovery and will be sad to see it go, but there is a Defender shaped gap in my life which needs filling!

Well thats understandable! The Defender shape lends itself to a lot more 'tweaking'!

So - plan for rear is to shift the spare wheel carrier rearwards a few inches. Remove the current fastened-to-and-opening-with-back-door set up, and have clips instead. The lifting roof section will come down in behind the spare wheel carrier, and will have a door that is slighty wider/taller than the existing back door and be top-hinged and on gas struts.

So to open back door I unclip the spare wheel carrier, and swing it away, turn the lifting roof door's handle and it swings up to horizontal and the original back door can then swing open as normal. And the nice touch is that the new lifted door acts as an awning over the back door. And if I'm sleeping in it with the roof down (which I do often when out working alone) I can leave the door in the up position and be able to get in and out from the back.

When the roof is lifted and you can stand up inside, the lifting rear door allows me to have a huge hole at the end up top to let air in if its really warm (Giant bug net curtain can pull across.)

So best of both worlds. And the sides/back will be 25mm thick - 4mm ply inner, 1.2mm alloy skin on a 19mm box alloy frame, with Kingspan insulation so plenty warm.

In down position the roof will be sealing against a lower lip that runs around the van, and in the up position a couple of mating gaskets and flip-over piece fior the rear (its sounds complex but in reality will be simple!).

The whole plot (i hope!) will lift on 12v linear actuators so a button press to lift and lower which not only saves my back but allows a level/even lift which redcues stress on the roof/hinges/welds.

So far I've got the side and rear frames welded, bought insulated windows, hinges, rod latches for back door, and roughly cut the alloy skins. Wee bit more welding then I can assemble and work out the actual details!

Smile to be honest the ally wedling is done by an expert - I do the design ideas and accurate measuring and cutting (chopsaw) of the bits using a wooden template then clamp the bits for the frames to the template. Thsi allows the welder do ithe welds easily and quickly. We do a wee bit at a time - I go away check it fits, come back for some more etc.

With some forethought its within most folks capabilities. I did all my work out on the drive - no fancy workshop.
