I accidentally picked up a refurbed Twisted DRL bumper at the LRO Show yesterday. It comes complete with the standard Ring DRL controller which I assume will turn DRL's on with ignition and then off when side lights are turned on.
However I would prefer them to operate as follows; on with ignition, dimmed with side and main lights and full on with high beam. I think this would be legal? Perhaps ought to add I have Angel Eyes headlights with the DRL halo wired in with side lights. Can anyone recommend a controller to work in this way? Thank you. It should be possible to do that with some relays and a standard dimming DRL controller.
You need a changeover relay that's energised by the full beam feed. The common terminal goes to the DRLs, the normally closed contact (i.e. linked to common when the relay isn't energised) goes to the DRL controller and the normally open contact goes to a suitably beefy 12V feed (which could just mean it's the same as the DRL controller's input). |

Sounds complicated
Thinking about it more also, I wonder with the halo headlights that come on with the side lights should I keep it simple and just have the DRL turn off when side lights come on? Will dimmed DRL side lights and halo be too much?!?! Will having DRL come back on with high beam make any difference? It really isn't that complicated to do what you're trying to do, it's just one relay in addition to the standard controller!
You could always rig something up temporary to test how effective the DRLs are along with the main beam. |
