My mate loves Morzine so much he bought a chalet there
I can send you his "flyer" - as he rents out occasionally if you are interested. Sleeps 6/8 (6 easy, 8 at a push). Short walk into town... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Our kids grew up on ski trips to Schladming in Austria. A longer drive than France but still pretty easy. 4 connected mountains so huge range of skiing in a much more traditional resort. Plenty of other activities there including night skiing, dedicated toboggan run, glacier skiing. Has a world cup downhill run too for the adrenaline junkies...

My brothers in laws rent out a stunning big farmhouse in Morzine.
http://www.chaletfinder.co.uk/accommodation/la-dolce-vita-28654/ edit to add, its on the edge of town past the church with tons of parking outside and away from the hustle and bustle. Always very impressed with the town itself, restaurants are plentiful and very good. I dont advise jumping in the pool of the big hotel at 4am when very drunk when you are not a guest. its not welcome at all |

I'd reccomend Morzine too - a good ski area and a nice town. It's one of those places that was a town before it was a ski resort - and it shows with not having that resort feel.
I don't really hear any criticisms of it ? On the opposite end of that is Flaine - really nothing there but the skiing, however it's pretty snow sure, an easy drive, and there's some nice runs. We like it and quite a few Brits drive there. The critisms I hear of it that it has ugly buildings - though a couple of hotels/chalets on the edge (Eos for e.g) are a bit better. But personally I spend all my time looking at the mountains rather than the chalets ... If you are the type of skier who likes to tick the runs off and only really do them once, then you'll find it a bit small - but if you like nice views and are happy to work on your skiing - then you're fine. It's perhaps also more suited to self catering than eating out every night ? I'll think of some more - but when I think of driving those are the two that jump out. |

I have driven to the Alps for the last 14 years. Great flexibility. Anywhere in the three valleys will be good.
My personal choices are La Plagne, Alpe d'Huex, Meribel and also Tignes. Andy Defender Td5 XS90 |

If you're interested we rent out place out - see www.chaletletadorne.co.uk. Oh and in the next village is a micro brewery run by a lovely French couple - he trained with Guinness!!

Thanks everyone for the ideas and your feedback.
As we have a fussy eater (9 year old boy) we tend to find that self catering works best for us and have for the past 4 seasons been staying at Les Arcs 1950 which is a ski in ski out resort. Need to iron out the dates with the missus so the date may be first week in Jan or late Dec. The past few years have had slow starts to the ski season with limited snow fall so am taking this into account this year. Cheers Steve |

Les 3 Vallees are the largest sky area in Europe.
In this area, Couchevel is chic and expensive. Meribel is the best choice to stay as is located in the middle valley. If your choice is to sky, in this area you'll never get bored. http://www.les3vallees.com/ |
