Happens to mine too. Was meaning to ask about it. Don't know if it's right or not but it's very weird. When it happens it seems like the engine isn't turning off immediately either but keeps going for like a fraction of a second or so.

It's just centrifugal inertia, it's not a 1L engine after all. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I've noticed this a small number of times and it only happens when it's been idling for a while.

Our Td5 does it too. I speculated it was maybe the balancing weight of the dual mass flywheel moving to and fro until it doesn't counteract with the springs anymore.

I think that a few of us have also got this shuddering (I think I described it as an abrupt clunk, but shudder is more accurate)
see thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic45073.html I was wondering if it happened whilst stopping the engine mid-cycle of a regeneration. but others have suggested alternative thoughts. |

Its a normal thing for a diesel, because of the high compression ratio. However, modern diesels have a throttle valve at the entrance to the intake manifold and has a couple of purposes. Firstly its used to create a pressure drop to enable high rates of EGR, secondly, it closes when the engine is shut off to cut the air supply ao there is nothing for the pistons to compress and prevent the typical diesel rock.
For some reason, sometimes this throttle doesnt shut when the engine is stopped. Nothing to do with DPF regen, as mine is non DPF and does the same thing sometimes. |
