Rear X Member replacement cost??
Howdy folks.

I need to change my x member and am currently considering a galv x member and changing the front bumper to match.

How much would I be looking at for the job to be done?

Thanks in advance.

Mac.

When I had mine done I bought the part separately and found a local welder to fit. From memory the labour to fit was 250 cash which included some chassis extensions. It all depends on how bad the chassis rails are and how much steel they have to cut back to get to a sound connection point.

I was quoted £900 by a local Land Rover specialist for them to supply and fit. I would imagine that fitting a galv crossmember is slightly more time consuming as you have to grind back some of the galv to prepare and is a horrible job to weld galv metal as I'm told it spits everywhere.

Fitting the front bumper is simple just 4 bolts which you could do yourself. I imagine would be an hours labour if you took it to your local garage.

Hope that helps

Jrule.

Many thanks. Wye valley LR have quoted me £500 for supply and fit. I know I can get a X member for under £200 so I guess £300 for the labour seems ok. I will probably steer clear of the galvy then. 👍

Cheers for the yard stick.

500 is a good price

no need to bother with a galv one.

good paint and waxoyl before and after fitting will last a good time.

and no dont waxoyl the bits that will be welded or near the welded parts

Thank you very much.

I guess I was just trying to penny pinch and thought if I sourced the
X member myself, it may be a little cheaper.

I guess if I can throw the old girl at Wye Valley along with 500 squidleys it would save me faffing around.

I'll be using Dinitrol once done.

Cheers. Mac.

If your replacing a rear cross member and intend to keep the vehicle then can I suggest you use Clive at Black Sheep off road.

His work is top class and a much stronger version with no mud traps, about £180 to buy + the fitting.

He was Essex direction. Not sure whether he's currently trading unfortunately, but it's worth getting in touch.

I have one of his Crossmembers and it's fantastic.

I emailed him about a month ago making a polite enquiry about prices for his cross members as I need to replace mine. To which I received the reply.

"I'm retired".

That was the entire reply. Fair enough he might be retired and fed up of people asking him but I felt it was a slightly discourteous. If he's that fed up then perhaps take down the website or put something up so people searching might find it. Also slightly odd that the reply came from a different email address, maybe his account was hacked?

Anyway, I'm thinking about the possibility of getting a similar one fabbed up by a local trailer manufacturer. Ed

He has had a slightly patchy history with them ,and parts of the LR community. Before I got mine (last December) he had supposedly stopped making them. Then was making but not fitting, then making and fitting again, now apparently retired.

It's a shame as they were fantastic quality. Very happy with mine.

Might have to get friendly with someone with a press brake and brush up on my welding. There's clearly a market out there....

Fitted this - www.paddockspares.com/heavy-duty-rear-x-me...59806.html
to my 1994 300 tdi a couple pf months ago and despite being Britpart I hate to admit the quality appears excellent and the fit was perfect.

Patchy history makes me sound crooked!
Im not interested in landrovers so the crossmembers are just a product
I make alongside my pay work at my engineering shop so sometimes I have time
To produce and at others not , a hospital job so to speak.

As far as fitting goes it depends upon my health as in 2013 I got a direct shock
across my heart and still suffer now .

Another factor with fittings is people turning up with vehicles that are really in
need of a chassis.

As far as the lr community i have customers that have become friends and there
are those like the person who phoned up at 5am to complain about a britpart xmember and im a xmember maker I should do something about it!
