Useful for talking to people you already know I'd say. I need to get mine fitted!
I have a UHF unit installed that I use far more on outdoors events, to talk to people with handheld radios. |

If you go on any form of organised trip a CB radio is normally listed as a requirement to keep small convoys in touch.... i.e. left at the next roundabout, stay there i'll spot you through that section etc etc.
Have now done two long trips where without them we'd have been a very disconnected group. Bit of banter, bit of info, car coming up the trail....... etc etc. If you're only generally driving on your own to places and don't do trips or go laning with others, I wouldn't bother. Personally and for our usage? Wouldn't be without one. |

Without wishing to hijack the thread, how many use PMR446 radios when laning etc in preference or in addition to CB?
Any arguments for or against? |

We use both, the range is very limited inside vehicles, but they're useful for when people don't have CB's in the group!! Means you have to repeat everything though.
We do carry a set just in case. Can be useful for spotting and winching. It is possible to buy vehicle mounted PMR systems which have greater range due to an externally mounted aerial but that might be pushing it a bit far...... |

Always use CB on green lane trips. Wonderful now the morons have taken up other occupations.
Very handy for motorway trips - Still the best advance info on hold-ups. |

Out of interest what channel do you generally hear traffic updates etc on?
Ive sat on CH19 for hours and heard nothing in the past other than people in the convoy im with. Is it still commonly used by truckers? |

I've got one in mine (was fitted when I bought it), never used it but might just leave it on 19 if that's the general consensus!

^^^^^ you'll get truckers using it, but you'll need to be fairly close to pick up anything. I guess ch 19 is the usual channel for starting a conversation then you can both switch to another channel to continue.
My experience is the language used while on the road is pretty ripe, so be careful who you have in car with you... As others have said, I use CB primarily for green lane trips where's it's invaluable for keeping the group together. Cheers Simon |

If you want to talk to people on the air, then HAM radio is alive. Can be fairly active, but you need a license.
Worth taking if you're at all interested in radio, electronics etc. As for CB, really only good for green lane runs, but, if you get a reasonable set that supports SSB (single side band), you would be surprised what you can get. It's not unknown for signal reception skipping over from the US. Do a YouTube search for CB, SSB, Skip. Cheers, Moles |
