What do you think will be a future classic?
Just out from the RAC at No 6 in the list is the SAAB 9000 Aero Very Happy

They said:
'Most old Saabs have become cult cars - the 9000 (exhibited beautifully, in Sab's original press image, on a beach with a woman happily gazing into the distance) will be no different.

It offers a large comfortable sports saloon and executive hatch, with seriously powerful turbocharged engines and a chassis that – while not perfect – was good by the standards of 1985.

Even today there isn’t much that will keep pace with a well-driven 9000 Aero, and certainly not while carrying quite so much luggage and quite so many people this comfortably.

The Saab 9000 is such a competent all-rounder, it cannot fail to be a classic – useful, charismatic, and addictive.'

Link not working but MX5 is at the top, would agree with that also...

said picture... A lot of quality engineering for 4-5k Wink

Not many left in the country, think about 500, good ones are largely kept by enthusiasts so do not come on the market very often. Couple of very nice examples here Wink Very Happy

I think about this all the time. A few years ago I thought about buying a Honda NSX but bought a BMW X1 instead. Worst decision ever. NSX's doubled in value not long after that.

I love Japanese sports cars and think the Honda S2000 will certainly gain classic status if it hasn't already.

Ironically, for such a popular car, rarity might help the MX5. They suffer from rust nearly as bad as a Defender and good early ones are not easy to find. I believe the Mk2 is even more rot prone than the MK1. They are really nice to drive so their classic status is assured.

Not sure about the Saab 9000. I like 900s but the 9000 had a lot in common with the Lancia Thema so wasn't as pure Saab.

Other cars that will become classics? Porsche Boxster has got to be a good bet, all Porsches become collectible in the end. What about the Alfa 156 V6, they are nearly scrap money now but looked stunning when they came out and have one of the best sounding engines of all time. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Given the stats regarding land rover defenders and historical variants (3/4 ever built are still running), the defender may become a classic but not a rare classic.

Future classics .. perhaps lancia stratos (already is)

integrale (is almost) , RS6 avant (audi-power-porn)

Mk1 TT ... beauty in the eye of the beholder ... what's a classic for one person might not be for another

I drove a Saab once, liked the "lights out" dashboard feature Thumbs Up

Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
The Defender now is already a Classic.
Proof is the Swiss Classic British Car Meeting here which takes place in Morges on Lake Geneva every October.
All Classic cars taking part on the showgrounds in that meeting have to be at least 20 years old, but some say that last year a select number of much younger Defenders were invited open armed to take part in this magnificent event. A few were well under 10 years young apparently.
And some say that these Defenders were attracting abnormally huge crowds of spectators.
Apparently this coming October there will be one or more relatively recent Defenders on the showgrounds again there, even if the 20 years or older rule remains firmly in place. Whistle The exception makes the rule, best proof of the de facto Classic status of the Defender. Thumbs Up
Eric
http://www.british-cars.ch/index_a.html You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Yes the 9000 is a more modern box compared to a 99/900 but it has very little in common with a Lancia. it was realised quite quickly that the Collaberation between between Alfa/Fiat wasn,t going to work due to the differences in quality and development. Different development tasks were allocated to the companies, e.g. Safety and rust proofing for SAAB but it was soon realised that the companies were poles apart in standards of engineering and development. SAAB tore up the agreement after just over a year.

LANCIA did not want to enter the USA market with all it,s hard regulations e.g. Emissions and saftey whilst the USA was SAABs main market. The SAAB also had to withstand the harsh Nordic environment. "Real" SAABS have always been built to last twice as long as other marques. You know the result of Lancia rust protection Rolling Eyes The list goes on with electrical components to quality of seat design so in the end the cars only shared a few items such as doors etc. SAAB made a loss on each car of course, it was once again an exercise in expensive over engineering and innovation and the downfall of the company.

It was Swedens safest car 5 years on the trot, dirty air going in the engine was cleaner coming out, first car to have a pollen filter, superb under stressed engine, soul and a great deal of respect. The GM SAAB,s although good are not a patch on the real SAABs but then they tried to make a profit!

It was part of the Type 4 group, a conglomeration of Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, Alfa 164 and the 9000.

That in itself was unusual at the time, now many manufacturers share chassis, engine, body. Parts.

My future classics would be

Audi Rs - any model
Mer AMG - any model
Fiat 124 Spider Abarth
Alfa 4c Cheers Simon

A conglomeration SAAB pulled out of very quickly Laughing Shocked They did however keep the mid section as you can see from the pictures. The front end was crash tested to withstand a Moose hit, some interesting footage on You tube for that one. SAAB were appalled by the lack of safety development by the other marques and the quality in general so went there own way...

My partner and her Dad share a Saab 95 estate, its a real shed but it goes like the wind and is supremely comfortable. Never once let them down.
