Intermittant failure to start
I drive a 57 plate 90, done 45k miles and now it intermittantly fails to start. It's just out of warrantee LOL! Dash lights up as normal but fails to crank. Lights and guages don't appear to be doing anything strange. I've tried locking and unlocking on plip unit, still nothing. Knocking starter relay to see if it's jammed. Still nothing. This fault always seems to happen when the engine is warm.
A dozen times while in warranty I had similer fault occured only this time we had no dash lights but it cranked for half a second after a few mins it started fine. The Stealer looked at this 3 times and suprise suprise nothing found to be at fault.
Any body had anything similer.

I had something similar happen to my 57 plate CSW - turned out to be a fault with the imobiliser.

Back in 1997 my missus bought me a new golf gti for my 30th birthday. For the first 6 months it was constantly in and out of the dealers. The reason for this was that when warm and you leave it to go somewhere come back and try to start it nothing would happen, but only when warm. If you left it 30 mins and tried again it would start first time. They replaced the immobiliser, alarm, ecu, fuel injection system and 2x starter motors but still no joy. It then would sometimes kick over but would not fire, again only when warm?
In the end it turned out to be a faulty £10 relay Thud when cold there was contact but once it warmed up thats when the problem started.

I get the same. Does not like to start when warm. In my case I shift to 6th and turn the key. It works (still). Puma 110" SW

Check the starter motor solenoid connections and Engine Earth connection, if that fails replace the Starter relay. Richard

I've just had this for the second time and both times it's been the battery positive connector coming slightly loose. All the gauges were fine but there wasn't enough power getting through to turn the starter. A turn of the battery connector cured it both times. If it happens again i think i'll change them.
Hope your fix is as simple as mine was Thumbs Up 130 crew cab

Snap on my 08.

Only happened a couple times, it's like the battery is flat and can't turn the engine. All dash lights normal.

I just keep turning off and back on until it cranks.

This also happened to me

cranks half a second the dies ... 10 retry´s and in the end it would go

also had a really weird experience !!!
after i had the start problem again , I drove 50km back home , parked car on driveway .
Then I turned my key and ejected my key . and to my disbelief my TD4 was still running...
immediately called the Dealer furiously ! and when they answered the car shut off ...
without turning a key !

immediately went to my dealer (40km) but the dealer could n´t find anything...

but i haven't managed to replicate this event in 1 year...
but my mother sometimes drives with my car and she said a few weeks ago that the Defender wouldn't start ...

Oh God why do I have this LR Dealer....

Sorted. 3 hours of tracing cables and checking circuits.A mechanical fault was the cause, part of the ignition switch had cracked so while key turned to crank switch didn't.
Of coruse this was 1230 on a Saturday so all parts stores shut.A quick trip to the breakers and the part required was removed from a rather flat 08 truck cab. Its never over in my land rover.
