Battery box rust
Good morning all,
I would like to have some advice on what to do with a little bit of surface rust in my battery box (see picture).
It ain't really bad, but I would like to prevent the rust to go any further.

Here are the options I'm thinking about:

    - Dinitrol treatement (I am planning on giving the chassis a full dinitrol treatement next summer)
    - ACF50
    - anti rust paint

Should I go for a definitive solution (dinitrol) or just do something temporary (like ACF 50) until i do my dinitrol treatment this summer, and do the battery box at the same time?
Or should I do something else I haven't thought about?

I started by cleaning all the dirt out of the box and I already used a wire brush to scratch some of that rust away.

thanks in advance for your help!

A rust killer treatment and then paint for an area like that. You don't want a liquid finish like ACF50.

I've got to do the same to mine but I'm waiting for warmer weather before embarking on painting projects. Darren

Thanks for your input LandRoverAnorak.
Do you recommend any product un particular for the rust killer treatment?
Would a rust converter (like the dinitrol RC800) work for this operation?

Not particularly, to be honest. They all seem to do much the same thing, as far as I can see. The Dinitrol product gets good press but I've had good results with Kurust from Halfords. Darren

Kurust and then hammerite is what I used for my battery box which had far more rust that that. I was very liberal with the Kurust and allowed it to run into the battery clamp 'grills' on the bottom (with a cloth underneath the vehicle to prevent marks on the drive !) - juts make sure its no already full of mud / dirt so get the hoover in there first !

Thanks both for your input. I got myselft some Dinitrol as I will use more of it when I treat my chassis.
The product is on its way, and I will paint the battery box by the end of the week!

Hi custom90steve, did you cover the whole box in dynamat? I read a while ago (i think t was on this forum) that it wasn't recommended to cover the holes as there could be some chemical reactions with the battery, if there was no air circulation...
I was thinking about putting a layer of dynamt on the lid of the battery box (under the seat) later on (dynamat is on my to do list), but that wouldn't affect the box itself I think...

Does dynamat have that foil covering over it? You wouldnt want a short across the battery because the terminals hit the cover! I used some thick rubber sheeting cut to shape and stuck to the bottom of the battery box cover

Yes, foil.
I did just the base inside only for that reason, and the lid under and over taped around the edges.
It'll never get near the battery terminals on mine.
No point in Dynamatting the inside other that lid top and bottom, and the seatbox base.
The sides and inner top of the seatbox is no point if you Dynamat the outside lie I did instead.
The base is quite a resonant flat panel without doing it.
There is some vent holes there IIRC, I covered them bar one, a larger one if I remember rightly.

The battery has a breather anyway, or at least it should! $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I finished the battery box this weekend. I'm happy with the end result. I added a stripe of aluminium tape on one edge that looked exposed to prevent contamination by dirt... i don't know if it was necessary though...
