oil filter, filled it up with oil b4 screwing on????
done an oil change on my defender 300tdi and I filled new oil filter up with oil before screwing it on,, but I looked in my manual and it says screw it on empty? would I have done any harm by filling it up first before adding rest of oil?? Confused

No.......

IMHO whilst a Tiny Microscopic minimal amount of harm can be done with having an empty filter it has always been one of those old good practice things that reason has been left in the mist's of time

It has something I have always done with my old V8's as the oil pump doesn't prime all that well and especially with the older 'Skew gear' type then priming it involves removing the bottom cover and packing with Vaseline, a job best avoided if you can.

thanks devon-rover was just a little paranoid as just had an engine rebuild 1500 miles ago and I didn't want to do anything damaging to the pump or filter,
I have done it with other vehicles ive owned but wasn't sure if it could damage oil cooler or over pressurise any hoses, thanks for your help mate, cheers Very Happy

Always fill all filters back up before putting them on in m opinion.

I feel you will do more harm and no harm doing it. Mike

Only thing worth pointing out is that the amount of oil you put in the filter counts towards the total fill of the engine.

Ie, if you put 0.5l of oil in the filter put 6.5l in the top of the engine, not 7l otherwise you will risk overfilling it which is a little more dangerous.

Also remember to check the oil level soon after just in case Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

There is a full, with filter, without filter amount - if you havent seen that, i never fill100% in the first go, go 80-90% then top up after the initial start Mike
