I suspect Beery has pretty much nailed it. The fuel cooler only cools the fuel to something above coolant temperature so you still have hot fuel heading back to the tank. I've noticed this in the past when working on the fuel tank when there's not much fuel in it, the tank itself can get quite warm when the engine is running.

On the TD5s you'd expect the effect to be less noticeable as the fuel is returned to the filter housing and then goes straight into the high pressure pump from there, having said that the fuel in the tank may still cool the fuel pump. I think the Puma uses a different fuel layout though ? http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/
