I've bitten the bullet and ordered one of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222185508297?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT I've allways been wanting to have a dual sim phone, Vodafone has a good coverage yes but it's not that good so I'm planning to have a PAYG different network card in there to mop up when mine has no signal. I specifically wanted GPS but if you didn't want it you can knock £25/£30 off the price. Time will tell if I've made the right decision. |

wouldnt a iPhone with a rugged case suffice?
I just have a standard iPhone without a case, work in a marine environment take it climbing, downhill mountain biking etc and only had one screen mishap in the last year, funny enough getting out of the defender it was in my back pocket and slid out as i slid over the recaro side bolsters.. |

I use an iPhone in a life proof case, it has a spare battery internally that will re-charge the phone completely. So far it has survived dunkings in various oils, covered in grease etc. It even survived a winch where I forgot to remove it from my pocket. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

+1 on the iPhone in a decent case. We equip our guys with Otterboxes http://www.otterbox.co.uk/en-gb/defender-s...;gclsrc=ds and they do a good job.
Our guys are on ships and commercial construction sites all day every day and use their phone for work recording etc so they are treated pretty rough!! |

iPhone in an otterbox case or griffin for me.
I looked at android tough phones before getting my 6plus but were a bit slow and clunky in my opinion. I find a 6 plus just right for me as I've got big hands When it's in a otterbox or griffin case it's not the sort of thing that fits in your jeans pocket easily but They do offer a high level of protection and are easy to hold when your covered in mud etc |

I've just bought a CAT S60. Very cool, ruggedised, waterproof to 5 metres, shockproof (1.8m repeated drop), dual SIM, and built in thermal imaging.
As an aside, it is interesting that the rear axle on my Defender always gets hotter than the front. |

I had a Cat B15 once which wasn't very good.
To add insult to injury it was a dual sim phone but the UK version only had one slot enabled. |

The new CAT phone is a whole different league. The old one's like various others ... JCB phones etc where generally old tech in a tough case.
The latest is a pretty well speced bit of kit and yes, the thermal camera is fun! They're a bit steep price wise, so sadly not for me, but none the less, a decent bit of kit! |

And yes, generally speaking, the rear axles will get hotter as they generally take a little more punishment!

The rear axle also gets less effective cooling than the front, usually has more weight on it than the front, and (although I am not sure how much difference this makes) lacks the vented disks that are at the front.
I had noticed that the rear is always warm to the touch whilst the front is cool long before I decided that it would be a good subject for the new thermal imaging toy! I also agree that the new CAT phone is in an entirely different class to the older ones, it seems to be a very well-made and well-engineered device. It is pricey, but at around £530 unlocked is not really any different to an unlocked iPhone (mind you I have always felt that the iPhone is over-priced as well as over-rated). |

I tend to stick to the now 'not cool' phones :p (the one's that are older than about 3 days!)!
Dont like to spend any more than a couple hundred and that's begrudgingly! I tend to brake, scratch and generally destroy stuff far to fast to spend £500+! Plus I see that as sacrificed Defender money ha! |

I have a waterproof work-issued Galaxy S5, to which they added an otterbox and a gorilla glass screen protector. I've cracked the protector but it saved the screen so I do the same on my personal phone. The protectors seem to double the thickness of the glass but offer sacrificial protection. Just a shame the same screen protector on my personal phone wasn't as strong as my Spaniel's teeth when he retrieved it to me ....
I'm firmly of the opinion that choosing the right phone and then protecting it as best you can is the way to go. Otterbox offer various levels of protection and seem to do the job. I am actually the clumsiest person in the universe so they've been thoroughly tested over the years. |
